  Poetry. A form of words that seems so elegantly simple in one verse and so cleverly complex in another.  Each poet has a particular style, an individual and unique way with words and yet each of us seems to recognise the path and destination of where the verses lead, even if sometimes the full comprehension may be a little beyond us. 
   
  Through the centuries every culture has produced verse to symbolize and to describe everything from everyday life, natural wonders, the human condition and even in its more hubristic moments, the crushing triumph of an enemy. 
   
  In the volumes of this series, we take a look at poetry through the prism of individual regions of England, or sometimes more quaintly known as ‘Albion’, or ‘Blighty’, through the centuries of its gloried history. 
   
  England, despite its perception of reserve and under-statement has, in reality, strode the global stage at various time in many things, both good and bad, from Empire to long distance running. Here our focus in on its literature.  Famed for its fiction and dramas, it is equally admired for its plethora of gifted poets and the dazzling verse which has added so much to its artistic legacy.  These classic poets are wonders of their age and of their art.  Genius is written in their names. 
   
  In this volume our poems come from the East Midlands in the centre of England. Once a vast manufacturing hub whose industries invented, created and exported the future to the entire world.  From its industry and grime came poets of the first rank including Alfred Lord Tennyson, D H Lawrence, Anne Bradstreet, John Dryden, John Clare and many others.

  Duino Elegies

  We have a marvelous, almost legendary image of the circumstances in which the composition of this great poem began. Rainer Maria Rilke was staying at Duino Castle, on a rocky headland of the Adriatic Sea near Trieste. 
  One morning, he walked out onto the battlements and climbed down to where the cliffs dropped sharply to the sea. From out of the fierce wind, Rilke seemed to hear a voice: Wer, wenn ich schriee, horte mich denn aus der Engel Ordnungen? (If I cried out, who would hear me up there, among the angelic orders?). 
  He wrote these words, the opening of the first Duino Elegy, in his notebook, then went inside to continue what was to be his major opus—completely only after another ten, tormented years of effort—and one of the literary masterpieces of the century.  
  Duino Elegies speaks in a voice that is both intimate and majestic on the mysteries of human life and our attempt, in the words of the translator David Young, “to use our self-consciousness to some advantage: to transcend, through art and the imagination, our self-deception and our fear.”

  Many times in life we cannot see what is in our future, or what is coming down the road. In those moments, we have to walk by faith, not by sight. Being blind, Debby has had many of those experiences, as a parent, counselor, grandparent and someone who simply loves life. Her faith in a God who loves us shifts that frightening scenario into one of confidence and peace. In this book, through stories and poetry, she describes some of those moments where she has walked by faith, not by sight, both spiritually and literally. Chapter 1 is about a water slide. "In reflecting on that experience, I at first thought that I perhaps should have asked more questions. Perhaps I should have known that it was three stories up with lots of curves and bumps. But maybe not. If I had known all that, I might would have opted out. And just think of all the fun I would have missed." Debby (Zook) Green was born in Central Pennsylvania into a Mennonite pastor's family, one of five children. With normal sight at birth, she gradually lost her vision and by the age of 20, had only light perception. That did not stop her from completing college and having a career in counseling, first as a rehabilitation counselor with the state of Kentucky and then as a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor. She was married and has a daughter and two grandsons. Stories about those early years of sight loss can be found in a previously published book, Debby. Currently, she resides in Elizabethtown, Kentucky where she is active in her church, Calvary Assembly of God. She provides counseling services through her private practice, Transformation Christian Counseling and makes frequent trips to Tennessee to hang out with her grandsons.
