Synopsis

In "Short Stories," Fyodor Dostoyevsky presents a captivating collection that showcases his mastery of psychological depth and moral complexity. These narratives, rich in existential themes, delve into the human psyche, illuminating the struggles of faith, redemption, and the duality of man. The stories encapsulate a variety of settings—from the gritty streets of St. Petersburg to the intimate confines of troubled minds—reflecting Dostoyevsky's ability to weave profound philosophical inquiry with intricate character studies. Written during a period of social upheaval in Russia, these tales resonate with the 19th-century literary context that grappled with issues of identity, morality, and the human condition. Fyodor Dostoyevsky, a towering figure in Russian literature, experienced a tumultuous life marked by poverty, political imprisonment, and personal loss, all of which deeply influenced his writing. His profound understanding of human nature stemmed from these experiences, as well as his intense engagement with questions of faith, doubt, and redemption. Dostoyevsky's literary journey was shaped not only by his own trials but also by the intellectual currents of his time, particularly existentialism and philosophy. There is something about the number 3.
The Ancient Greeks believed 3 was the perfect number, and in China 3 has always been a lucky number, and they know a thing or two.
Most religions also have 3 this and 3 that and, of course, in these more modern times, three’s a crowd may be too many, except when it’s a ménage à trois. It seems good things usually come in threes.
Whatever history and culture says WE think 3, a hat-trick of stories, is a great number to explore themes and literary avenues that classic authors were so adept at creating.

"The Adventure of the Norwood Builder", one of the 56 short Sherlock Holmes stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is the second tale from The Return of Sherlock Holmes. The story was first published in The Strand Magazine in 1903 with original illustrations by Sidney Paget.
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are visited by "the unhappy John Hector McFarlane", a young lawyer from Blackheath who has been accused of murdering one of his clients, a builder called Jonas Oldacre. McFarlane explains to Holmes that Oldacre had come to his office only a day earlier and asked him to draw up his will in legal language. McFarlane saw, to his surprise, that Oldacre was making him the sole beneficiary and even heir to a considerable bequest, and McFarlane cannot imagine why Oldacre would do so. That business took McFarlane to Oldacre's house in Lower Norwood, where some documents had to be examined for legal purposes. They had been kept in the safe, where the murder allegedly took place. McFarlane left quite late and stayed at a local inn. He claims to have read about the murder in the newspaper the next morning on the train. The paper said quite clearly that the police were looking for him.
