Edgar Allen Poe is seen today as one of the greatest practitioners of gothic and detective fiction that ever lived, and popular culture is replete with references to him. In "The Pit and the Pendulum," one of his most famous short works, a condemned man is judged guilty by the Spanish Inquisition and sentenced to die. Locked away in a pitch-black cell, he soon discovers a pit in the center of the room, a watery grave at its base. Above him hangs a large, razor-sharp pendulum. As the man is slowly tortured, he must face either the pit or the pendulum.

Resilience in the face of adversity

With its rich storytelling, emotional depth, and cast of vividly drawn characters, David Copperfield is not just a tale of one man's life—it is a celebration of the human spirit and its ability to endure and flourish.

What if the greatest honeymoon in history took place among the stars?
In the year 1900, as the world stands on the brink of a devastating global conflict, a brilliant nobleman and a daring American heiress vanish from the surface of the Earth. Lord Redgrave has done the impossible: he has realized the dreams of a forgotten genius to build the Astronef, a vessel capable of navigating the shoreless ocean of space. His mission is twofold—to prevent a world war through the sheer awe of his technology, and to steal away his true love, Zaidie Rennick, from a soul-crushing marriage of convenience.
A Honeymoon in Space is a foundational masterpiece of Science Fiction that predates the modern space opera. From the breathtaking heights of the Atlantic clouds to the desolate, ghost-haunted craters of the Moon, follow Lenox and Zaidie as they witness sights no human eye was ever meant to see. Their journey is a 'Grand Tour' of the solar system, discovering the secrets of Mars, the beauty of Venus, and the terrifying silence of dead civilizations.
Why you will love this: Fans of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells will find a kindred spirit in Griffith’s work. This story masterfully blends Steampunk aesthetics with Hard Science Fiction concepts of gravity and atmosphere, all wrapped in a sweeping Planetary Romance. It is an essential listen for anyone who craves high-adventure exploration, retro-futurism, and the enduring power of human ingenuity against the infinite dark.
George Griffith was a prolific pioneer of the 'scientific romance' in the late 19th century. Known for his staggering imagination and ability to predict future technologies, his legacy as a titan of early Science Fiction is perfectly captured in this cinematic, star-bound odyssey.

Part 1: The Old Buccaneer from Treasure Island:
"For sheer storytelling delight and pure adventure, Treasure Island has never been surpassed. From the moment young Jim Hawkins first encounters the sinister Blind Pew at the Admiral Benbow Inn until the climactic battle for treasure on a tropic isle, the novel creates scenes and characters that have fired the imaginations of generations of readers. Written by a superb prose stylist, a master of both action and atmosphere, the story centers upon the conflict between good and evil - but in this case a particularly engaging form of evil. It is the villainy of that most ambiguous rogue Long John Silver that sets the tempo of this tale of treachery, greed, and daring. Designed to forever kindle a dream of high romance and distant horizons, Treasure Island is, in the words of G. K. Chesterton, 'the realization of an ideal, that which is promised in its provocative and beckoning map; a vision not only of white skeletons but also green palm trees and sapphire seas.' G. S. Fraser terms it 'an utterly original book' and goes on to write: 'There will always be a place for stories like Treasure Island that can keep boys and old men happy.'

Louisa MacDonald was born in 1845, one of eleven children of part Scottish descent. Together with three of her sisters they were known as the ‘MacDonald sisters’ primarily because of their marriages to well-known men.
In 1866 she married the wealthy industrialist Alfred Baldwin in a double wedding with her sister Anne.
After giving birth to Stanley on the 3rd August 1867, who would go on to become Prime Minister, she drifted into an unhappy life in her then residence in Worcestershire. She had at least one miscarriage and days alone depressed and in darkness.
During the 1870’s the couple travelled to find a lasting cure and tried a variety of treatments which led to her recovery in 1883. She now became a leading figure in her local village of Wilden, near Stourbridge.
Her writing career of novels, short stories and poetry is often overlooked, as was the case with so many women, yet her works reveal many talents and a gift for melding odd and weird circumstances into seemingly everyday life.
    Louisa Baldwin died in 1925.
