Synopsis

Salammbo is a historical novel by Gustave Flaubert. It is set in Carthage during the 3rd century BC, immediately before and during the Mercenary Revolt which took place shortly after the First Punic War. Flaubert's main source was Book I of Polybius's Histories. It was not a particularly well-studied period of history and required a great deal of work from the author, who enthusiastically left behind the realism of his masterpiece Madame Bovary for this tale of blood and thunder.

After the First Punic War, Carthage is unable to fulfill promises made to its army of mercenaries, and finds itself under attack. The fictional title character, a priestess and the daughter of Hamilcar Barca, an aristocratic Carthaginian general, is the object of the obsessive lust of Matho, a leader of the mercenaries. With the help of the scheming freed slave, Spendius, Matho steals the sacred veil of Carthage, the Zaïmph, prompting Salammbô to enter the mercenaries' camp in an attempt to steal it back. The Zaïmph is an ornate bejewelled veil draped about the statue of the goddess Tanit in the sanctum sanctorum of her temple: the veil is the city's guardian and touching it will bring death to the perpetrator.

We too often realize what we want only after it’s gone.
In 1906 Montreal, Elie Rutherford dreams not of marriage, but of science. She longs to join the groundbreaking physics lab led by her father, the legendary Ernest Rutherford, at McGill University. But in an era confines women to domestic roles and separate classrooms, Elie finds herself trapped by societal expectations. Determined to follow her passion, she refuses to accept a marriage proposal that could shackle her ambition forever.
A century later, in 2006, William Hertz, a brilliant graduate physics student at McGill, lives an introverted life immersed in the world of astrophysics with his fellow misfit physicists. Wounded by past experiences, he keeps love at arm's length—until a mysterious woman, lost in time, crashes into his life.
When Elie concludes a lab mishap has catapulted her into the future, she must hide her identity to survive. But as her path crosses with William's, their shared love for physics kindles an undeniable connection. Together, they set out to recreate the experiment that could send Elie back to her time. Torn between her past and a future she never imagined, Elie faces a heart-wrenching choice. Will she find her way back to 1906 or embrace a new destiny?

Luck is no lady...in fact, she can be a downright bitch.
    Jake:
Coming home was supposed to be my shot at redemption. Instead, I’m finding myself chasing after an irresistible blonde whose mercurial behavior could give Jekyll and Hyde a run for their money. I’ve got too much on my plate to get tied up in knots over a girl who wants nothing to do with me. But Bailey Murphy may hold the key to my redemption, and I’m not giving up on either without a fight. "Irish" might play with a poker face, but I’m about to call her bluff...and I hope like hell I’ve got luck on my side.
    Bailey:
Let’s get one thing straight. I am not your typical girl. Sure, I’ve got all the parts, but I’ve been a stubborn, irreverent tomboy since the womb. Which makes it particularly ironic that my heart is so damn girly. It falls in love at the drop of a hat and leaves me to deal with the aftermath. But no more! If Jake Beckett thinks spending one night together gives him some claim on me, he’s got another thing coming - even if the mere thought of that night leaves me panting like a damn Labrador. I’m not about to open the door and let Jake in, but that choice may be taken from both our hands.

Set in New York City in the 1990’s, when Rudy Giuliani was Mayor and Bill Clinton was President, Looking for an Address explores the lives of Bengali men and women from both Bangladesh and India. Jhilli has come to New York for a few months from Kolkata for training at the School of Social Sciences, staying with her childhood friend Shipra in Queens. Through Jhilli’s eyes, we see the wonders of New York, meet their Bengali friends, and experience their friendships and romances with native New Yorkers Gloria, Joshua, and Benjamin.
There are bombs, both literal, with India’s nuclear testing, and figurative, with unexpected revelations about the characters and their lives.
Nabaneeta Dev Sen’s keenly observed sensitively depicts the intersection of the immigrants’ lives in New York as they search for a home and an address: for their bodies and their hearts. In 2025, as the plight of immigrants is hotly debated, the stories of these immigrants, whether cabbies or lawyers, are especially relevant and poignant.
The translator, Dr. Chhanda Chattopadhyay Bewtra is Emerita Professor at Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska. Her previous translations include novels by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay and Sirshendu Mukhopadhyay.

Quantum is a fast, character-driven techno-thriller that collides hard science with the most human of stakes. When brilliant Oxford researcher Bella and physicist Jack stumble onto a discovery that could rewrite energy, encryption, and power itself, their work draws the attention of governments, venture capital—and darker forces. From ancient lanes in Oxford to the pilgrim road of the Camino de Santiago, the wide skies of Arizona, and the tunnels beneath CERN, the pair race to understand what they’ve unleashed: a breakthrough at the edge of quantum physics with consequences for every person on earth. Friendship deepens into love as secrets, betrayals, and international intrigue mount. Rich with real science and place, Quantum asks what we owe to truth—and to each other—when discovery outpaces our ability to control it.
