Synopsis

In "The Birth of Tragedy," Friedrich Nietzsche explores the profound interplay between the Apollonian and Dionysian elements of art, positing that the synthesis of these opposing forces gives rise to the true genius of Greek tragedy. With its rich stylistic tapestry, the work oscillates between philosophical discourse and poetic reflection, inviting readers to contemplate the aesthetic experience as a conduit for existential meaning. Nietzsche critiques the decline of art and culture in his contemporary society, linking it to a broader philosophical nihilism that he perceives as threatening the very foundations of Western civilization. Friedrich Nietzsche, a pivotal figure in 19th-century philosophy, grapples with the implications of art and culture against the backdrop of burgeoning nihilism and the crisis of European thought. His experiences in the shadow of Romanticism, combined with a deep engagement with ancient Greek culture, motivated him to articulate a vision that champions tragedy as an essential cultural expression. This work serves as both a celebration and a lamentation, offering glimpses into Nietzsche's complex relationship with art, beauty, and the human condition. This seminal text is essential for readers interested in philosophy, literature, and the evolution of Western thought. Nietzsche's provocative insights challenge us to rethink the role of art in confronting life's inherent pain and chaos, making "The Birth of Tragedy" a timeless exploration of the depths of human experience.

When one thinks of the world’s first cities, Sumer, Memphis, and Babylon are some of the first to come to mind, but if the focus then shifts to India, then Harappa and Mohenjo-daro will likely come up. These cities owe their existence to India’s oldest civilization, known as the Indus Valley Civilization or the Harappan Civilization, which was contemporary with ancient Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt and had extensive contacts with the former, making it one of the most important early civilizations in the world.
The dynasty that came to power in the late 4th century BCE is known today as the Mauryan Dynasty, and although the ruling family was short-lived and their power was ephemeral, its influence resonated for several subsequent centuries and spread as far east as China and into the Hellenistic west.
Bactria was the seat of several different kingdoms during the course of many centuries, but none were as successful as the Kushan Empire, the dominant political entity in Central Asia from the early 2nd century BCE until the early 3rd century CE, during which time the Kushan rulers played a major role in the first iteration of the trade networks known collectively as the Silk Road.
From 1206 to 1526, the Delhi Sultanate controlled all of northern India and, during its apogee of power, nearly all of the Sub-Continent, making it one of the most impressive empires not only in India’s long history, but also in the history of Islam. The Delhi Sultanate was comprised of five dynasties that expanded their borders, and Islam, at sword point, but also through diplomacy and trade.
The Mughals, a group with Turkish and Mongolian roots, adopted elements of Islamic culture and meshed them with native Indian culture and even Western European culture. When the British conquered India in the mid-19th century, they had the benefit of inheriting the Mughal system, a suitable template for rule over a land as vast and diverse as India.

From Benjamin Hoff, author of The Tao of Pooh and The Te of Piglet, which have sold millions of copies worldwide, comes The Eternal Tao Te Ching, a new translation of the Chinese philosophical classic, the Tao Te Ching.

The Eternal Tao Te Ching is the first translation to employ the meanings of the pre-writing brush characters in use 2,400 years ago, when the classic was written, rather than relying on the often different meanings of the more modern brush characters, as other translations have done. Hoff points out in his chapter notes the many incidents of meddling and muddling that have been made over the centuries by scholars and copyists, and he corrects the mistakes and removes such tampering from the text. Hoff also makes the provocative claim—and demonstrates by revealing clues in the text—that the author of Tao Te Ching was a young nobleman hiding his identity, rather than the long alleged author, the "Old Master" of legend, Lao-tzu. And Hoff's chapter notes shed new light on the author's surprisingly modern viewpoint. This is a unique, and uniquely accessible, presentation of the Tao Te Ching.
