Summary

In "The Jumano Indians," Frederick Webb Hodge embarks on a meticulous exploration of the Jumano tribes, integral yet often overlooked figures in the narrative of American Indian history. Hodge employs a blend of ethnographic observation and historical account, presenting a vivid picture of the Jumano's complex social structures, cultural practices, and interactions with European settlers. His work situates the Jumano within broader themes of colonial encounter and cultural evolution, drawn from extensive field research and historical documents that reveal the multifaceted nature of their existence in the Southwest at the turn of the 20th century. Hodge, a noted anthropologist and historian, was deeply influenced by his experiences studying Native American cultures and his desire to document their histories in an era marked by erasure and misrepresentation. His academic rigor and empathetic approach reflect a commitment to preserving indigenous narratives'Äîa mission shaped by the broader context of early 20th-century anthropology, which was evolving from colonial frameworks toward more respectful representations of indigenity. This book is essential for anyone interested in Native American history, anthropology, or cultural studies. Hodge's scholarly work not only provides valuable insights into the Jumano yet also challenges readers to consider the broader implications of cultural survival amidst upheaval, making it a crucial addition to the field.

Jane Austen wrote six of the best-loved novels in the English language, as well as a smaller corpus of works unpublished in her day, including three volumes of witty, non-realist juvenilia and the innovative, unfinished, Sanditon. She pioneered new techniques for representing voices, minds, and hearts in narrative prose, and was a penetrating satirist of social tensions and trends. Yet Austen struggled for many years to break into print, and even as she became a published author in the last years of her relatively short life, reading tastes and book-trade expectations constrained as much as they enabled her literary career.

This Very Short introduction explores the major themes of Austen criticism through close analysis of her major and minor works, with particular emphasis on the literary, social, and political backgrounds from which the novels emerge, and with which they engage. Thomas Keymer combines critical introductions to each of Austen's six major novels with an exploration of the key themes in her works. The Austen who emerges is a writer shaped by the literary experiments and socio-political debates of the revolution decade, drawn in her maturity to a fundamentally conservative vision of social harmony, yet forever complicating this vision through the disruptive ironies and satirical energies of her prose.

Cities are living, breathing organisms that reflect humanity's most ambitious dreams and most pressing challenges. More than mere collections of buildings and infrastructure, they are complex ecosystems where social, economic, technological, and environmental dynamics interweave to create the spaces where human life unfolds. This comprehensive exploration—encompassing City Planning, the Evolution of Urban Planning, and Urban Design—offers a deep dive into the art and science of crafting urban environments that are not just functional, but transformative, sustainable, and responsive to the ever-changing needs of human communities.
The narrative of urban development is fundamentally a story of human adaptation, innovation, and collective imagination. From ancient civilizations' first planned settlements to today's smart, technologically integrated metropolises, urban planning represents a continuous dialogue between human potential and environmental constraints. By examining the historical trajectories, contemporary challenges, and future possibilities of urban design, this book illuminates the intricate processes that shape our collective living spaces. Readers will journey through the strategic thinking, technological innovations, social considerations, and visionary approaches that transform abstract concepts into tangible urban landscapes—revealing how thoughtful planning can address critical issues like sustainability, social equity, technological integration, and quality of life in an increasingly urbanized world.

The level of Earth’s Oceans have changed many times over the millennia.
Global sea level rose by a total of more than 120 meters (360 feet) as the vast ice sheets of the last Ice Age melted back. This melt-back lasted from about 19,000 to about 6,000 years ago, meaning that the average rate of sea-level rise was roughly 1 meter per century.
Since many early cities and civilizations were built near the coast, there must be many submerged ruins around the world we are not yet familiar with. The study of these ruins is one of the great unmapped needs for future archeology.
We do know about a few of these ruins and are learning much more. This book is a summary of what we know or think we know today about these lost civilizations, cities, and towns.
I’ve also included the stories of many legendary cities or locations like Atlantis and Lemuria.

The 50 years following the assassination of Severus Alexander on March 19, 235 CE has been generally regarded by academics as one of the lowest points in the history of the Roman Empire. This stands in stark contrast to the previous 150 years, which included the reigns of the Five Good Emperors and has been universally praised as one of the high points of the empire. Severus Alexander was the last of the Severan emperors, and the subsequent years of crisis (235-285 CE) were characterized by a series of short reigns, usually ending in the violent death of the reigning emperor.
At the same time, this period of time also saw the empire beset by threatening forces on all sides. The Romans faced a newly resurgent Persia in the east, as well as significant forces from German tribes on the Rhine and Goths along the Danube. The various conflicts would result in the unprecedented death of a sitting emperor in battle, which took place in 251 with Emperor Decius, and Emperor Valerian was captured in 260 CE.
Diocletian's reign would see reforms put into place to achieve the desired end of the Imperial Crisis, and several of the emperors before him may well have had the ability to manage the reform process, but the army’s power and willingness to use and abuse power ensured that few of them truly had a chance to really make their marks. It was the worst period in the history of the Roman Empire to that point, even as it forced the Romans to deal with belligerent foreign powers and problems created by the emergence of increasingly powerful and populous provinces.
The pressures created by population growth, both within the empire and outside of it, have been thoroughly researched, but more recently, issues created by climate change have also commanded attention.
