Wired for Connection are the lessons clients taught a therapist over a career about love, courage, vulnerability, shame and authenticity
Therapists learn and grow from therapy with clients--and now you can too!
Carolyn graduated from counselling school with a ton of head knowledge. Carolyn read 1000’s of pages and written hundreds more and learned the models and the approaches in the books. Did this therapist know enough to actually help people?
    Turns out she didn’t.
That’s where her clients come in. They taught her about life, about therapy, and about relationships.
So much of what clients taught her was paradoxical. Actually, they didn’t teach her—the most important lessons in life are better caught than taught. The lessons were counterintuitive to conventional relationship wisdom.
Together they learned the way to real relationships was messiness, mistakes and discomfort. They noticed the route to acceptance was authenticity, that tears make life better, and that raw courage is often about tender things like saying, “I’m sorry” and “I love you”. And so much more.
Relationships are hard—but we are wired for them. We are wired for struggle and growth. Watching people struggle with their own lives has inspired her to struggle and grow in hers.
Relationships are hard for us all. But if we show up to connect, and we do it anything like right, we learn from each other. We learn from each other in ways that surprise and delight us.
    We are wired for connection.

    The Earthquake - Your Journey...

Personal catastrophes are like an earthquake: they leave us too shaken to know what to do next, afraid that every step we take might spark another upheaval. But we can learn to resist our human instinct to hide from challenges. In this entertaining modern-day fable, Vince Poscente introduces us to the well-intentioned, conscious ant and the habitually fearful, subconscious elephant as seismic destruction changes their world and ultimately forces them to leave their oasis.

What Adir the ant and Elgo the elephant learn—and what you'll learn by journeying with them—is that the linear path they used to reach the oasis in The Ant and the Elephant does not work in the chaos after an earthquake. How can they breakthrough and thrive after a life-altering setback? The answer lies in the "Solution Loop," a tool that teaches them to use collaboration, curiosity, and creativity to: reframe dark times as illuminating experiences; resist the impulse to go it alone; find fresh perspectives; and eek a path where you can enjoy the journey.

The methodology is told using the time-honored method of a parable. Offering prescriptive advice, and based on Poscente's study of practices like decoding human behavior, the neuroscience of performance, and interpersonal dysfunction around fear, The Earthquake is a must-listen.

A reinterpretation of one of America's most notorious lynchings

The 1918 lynching of Mary Turner by a white mob in Brooks County, Georgia, is remembered and studied mainly because of the horror of an allegedly pregnant woman's murder. In Mary Turner and the Mob, author Thomas Aiello asserts that the gruesome details of Turner's execution have distracted historians from investigating the larger context of these terrible events. Turner was murdered but not pregnant, the author contends, and Walter White, the NAACP investigator in the case, knew this but obscured the facts because of the story's effectiveness.

Aiello approaches Turner's murder and broader violence in Brooks County not only as a series of lynchings in the rural South but also as events best understood as part of a sustained wave of racial violence during the long Red Summer, beginning in East St. Louis in 1917 and continuing until the Tulsa Massacre in 1921.

One night in 2009, Tanya Frank finds her nineteen-year-old son, Zach—gentle and full of promise—in the grip of what the psychiatrists would label a psychotic break. Suddenly and inexplicably, Tanya is thrown into a parallel universe: Zach's world, where the phones are bugged, his friends have joined the Mafia, and helicopters are spying on his family.

In the years following Zach's shifting psychiatric diagnoses, Tanya goes to war for her son, desperate to find the right answer, the right drug, the right doctor to bring him back to reality. Meanwhile, the boy she raised—the chatty, precocious dog-lover, the teenager who spent summers surfing with his big brother, the UCLA student—suffers the effects of multiple hospitalizations, powerful drugs that blunt his emotions, therapies that don't work, and torturous nights on the streets. Holding on to startling moments of hope and seeking solace in nature and community, Tanya learns how to abandon her fears for the future and accept the mysteries of her son’s altered states.

With tenderness, lyricism, and generous candor, this compelling story conveys the power of a mother's love. Zig-Zag Boy is both a moving lamentation for things lost and a brave testament to the people we become in difficult circumstances.
