Synopsis

In "Democracy in France: January 1849," François Guizot navigates the tumultuous waters of a nation on the cusp of profound political transformation. This work reflects Guizot's examination of the nascent democratic sentiments flourishing in post-revolutionary France, employing a historical lens that intertwines political theory with empirical observations. Characterized by a rigorous analytical style, Guizot's prose deftly critiques the concept of democracy against the backdrop of French history, illuminating the challenges and potential paths emerging from the revolutionary fervor of the time. François Guizot, a prominent historian and statesman, served as a minister and played a crucial role in shaping French political thought during a time of significant upheaval. His background as a scholar, with a focus on the history of France, provided him a unique vantage point to explore the implications of democratic governance amid the reverberating effects of the 1848 Revolution. Guizot's insights reflect his engagement with ideas of liberty, representation, and the development of the modern state, culminating in a call for cautious progress in governance. "Democracy in France" is essential reading for those keen on understanding the complexities of democracy's evolution, not only in France but within broader political contexts. Details how the US State Department attempted, and failed, to save South Vietnam from North Vietnamese aggression and the powerful domestic political influences that ultimately led to America's defeat.

Ten years after the end of the American involvement in the Vietnam War, a career Foreign Service officer, Thomas J. Corcoran, set down in writing his thoughts on the history of US State Department policy during America's involvement with South Vietnam. Like many Americans of his generation, he was perplexed by the failure of America to achieve its goals in South Vietnam. As an ambassador and with over thirty years of diplomatic experience—beginning in 1948 when he was assigned to Hanoi and involving other postings in Southeast Asia—he brought to his analysis a long and rich personal experience with events in Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

The result is a thoughtful, objective, and well-researched study that chronicles the key policy decisions made by the US State Department throughout the entire period from 1945 to 1975; decisions that ultimately led to the first war lost by the United States. In his extensive study, Corcoran does an excellent job of exposing many of the myths and falsehoods found in orthodox histories of US involvement in Vietnam.

An incisive, lyrical, and deeply reported account of India's descent into authoritarianism.

Traveling across India, interviewing Hindu zealots, armed insurgents, jailed dissidents, and politicians and thinkers from across the political spectrum, Siddhartha Deb reveals a country in which forces old and new have aligned to endanger democracy. The result is an absorbing—and disturbing—portrait. India has become a religious fundamentalist dystopia, one depicted here with a novelist's precise language and eye for detail.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party—a formation explicitly drawing on European fascism—has deftly exploited modern technologies, the media, and market forces to launch a relentless campaign on minorities, women, dissenters, and the poor. Deb profiles these people, as well as those fighting back, including writers, scholars, and journalists. Twilight Prisoners sounds the alarm now that the world's largest democracy is under threat in ways that echo the fissures in the United States, United Kingdom, and so-called democracies the world over.
