Synopsis

Francis Bacon's "New Atlantis" presents a visionary narrative that intricately blends the realms of philosophy, science, and utopian ideals. Set in a mythical island, the text unfolds a society that embodies Bacon's aspirations for a progressive future grounded in empirical knowledge and communal well-being. The work, characterized by its allegorical style and rich, descriptive prose, reflects the intellectual currents of the early 17th century, especially the burgeoning scientific revolution, positioning itself as a cornerstone of early modern thought. Bacon's portrayal of the scientific institution, Salomon's House, serves as a blueprint for the application of scientific inquiry to societal advancement, making the work not only a narrative but a profound treatise on the relationship between knowledge and human progress. Francis Bacon, an eminent philosopher, statesman, and scientist, was deeply influenced by the tumultuous political and scientific transformations of his era. His commitment to the empirical method and advocacy for a new system of knowledge were pivotal in shaping Enlightenment thought. This work reflects Bacon's vision of a society where knowledge is harnessed for the common good, stemming from his belief in the transformative power of science and inquiry, informed by both his personal experiences and the intellectual milieu of his time. Readers seeking a profound exploration of the interplay between knowledge, power, and utopian ideals will find "New Atlantis" not just a fascinating narrative but a foundational text that challenges them to reconsider the purpose of science in society. Bacon's insights remain strikingly relevant, inviting contemporary readers to ponder the responsibilities that accompany the pursuit of knowledge and the potential for human innovation to reshape our world.

Before the mid-19th century, European intervention in much of tropical Africa was extremely difficult because of the disease gradient. The combination of malaria and yellow fever commonly killed off half of European troops stationed in West Africa each year. It was the reverse of the conquest of the Americas, where introduced diseases wiped out 50 million indigenous Americans, opening the land to settlement and greatly reducing the ability to resist. This was much less of a problem in temperate southern Africa, accounting for the Dutch being able to set up a colony there in the 17th century.
The political situation was also important. Germany did not exist as a nation until 1871, when the German Empire was declared, following the decisive defeat of France in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. Germany united into a single nation under the former king of Prussia, who became kaiser (meaning emperor). Previously, Germany had been a linguistic and cultural region fragmented into a welter of kingdoms, dukedoms, margraviates, bishoprics, and free cities.
The German Empire would prove to be the most short-lived of all, because, along with the Russian and Ottoman Empires, it did not survive World War I. In 1919, Germany lost all of its African colonies, which then accrued as League of Nations mandated territories either to France or Britain. The mandate over German South West Africa, the future Namibia, was placed under British control by proxy, and its day-to-day administration was handled from South Africa. Ultimately, South Africa absorbed South West Africa as a virtual province and resisted pressure to cede authority to the United Nations for decades. However, the contest between Germany and Britain on the African continent during the late 19th century would also create the conditions that led to the North Africa Campaign in World War II.

    Made-Up - A True Story of Beauty...

A nuanced, feminist, and deeply personal take on beauty culture and YouTube consumerism, in the tradition of Maggie Nelson’s Bluets

As Daphné B. obsessively watches YouTube makeup tutorials and haunts Sephora’s website, she’s increasingly troubled by the ways in which this obsession contradicts her anti-capitalist and intersectional feminist politics. In this poetic treatise, she rejects the false binaries of traditional beauty standards and delves into the celebrities and influencers, from Kylie to Grimes, and the poets and philosophers, from Anne Boyer to Audre Lorde, who have shaped the reflection she sees in the mirror. At once confessional and essayistic, Made-Up is a meditation on the makeup that colours, that obscures, that highlights who we are and who we wish we could be.

The original French-language edition was a cult hit in Quebec. Translated by Alex Manley—like Daphné, a Montreal poet and essayist—the book’s English-language text crackles with life, retaining the flair and verve of the original, and ensuring that a book on beauty is no less beautiful than its subject matter.
