Synopsis

The book takes an overview of the various techniques that are used as part of the Blues Guitar, both acoustic and electric, and that any aspiring Bluesman should know and master.
It begins with fingerpicking used in Country Blues, with techniques typical of the alternating bass of the Piedmont Style, and moves to the monotonic bass of Texas Blues, and damping of the strings obtained with the right hand.
It explains how to deal with the melodic lines using the tonal ambiguity provided by the Blues Scale. It covers rhythm and Blues phrasing ruling with syncopation concepts and Swing Feel. The techniques of the left hand are analyzed such as hammer-ons, pull-offs, embellishments (acciaccature, mordent, trill, tremolo, and slide). Finally, it covers Bending, Vibrato, and Double-Stops.
It closes with a section that introduces Alternate Tunings and the use of the Bottleneck.

An award-winning architect and educator demystifies the process of making architecture and explains why good architectural design matters.   The design of cities and buildings affects the quality of our lives. Making the built environments in which we live, work, and play useful, safe, comfortable, efficient, and as beautiful as possible is a universal quest.   What many don’t realize is that professional architects design only about five percent of the built environment. While much of what non-architects build is beautiful and useful, the ugliness and inconveniences that blight many urban areas demonstrate that an understanding of good architectural design is vital for creating livable buildings and public spaces. To help promote this understanding among non-architects and those considering architecture as a profession, award-winning architect and professor Hal Box explains the process from concept to completed building, using real-life examples to illustrate the principles involved.   To cause what we build to become architecture, we have three choices: hire an architect, become an architect, or learn to think like an architect. In this book, organized as a series of letters to students and friends, Box covers:   what architecture should be and dohow to look at and appreciate good buildingshow to understand the design process, work with an architect, or become an architectan overview of architectural history, with lists of books to read and buildings to seepractical guidance about what goes into constructing a buildingan architect’s typical training and career pathhow architecture relates to the citywhere the art of architecture is headedwhy good architecture matters

A behind-the-scenes look at the Chitlin' Circuit during America's most vital period of soul music—from the eyes and ears of a young, Jewish kid from Queens who joined the team of the hardest working man in show business and learned the art of the music business at the hand of the performer who mastered it.
In the mid-'60s, Alan Leeds was a young DJ looking for his way into the music business. An interview with James Brown to promote a local show in Virginia led to an opportunity to promote one of Brown's concerts, which then led to Brown hiring him to help run his tours. Soon Leeds was wearing many hats and traveling around the country as Brown battled a complicated web of local promoters and managers, all too willing to try to rip him off.
In this riveting book—part memoir, part history—Leeds weaves a wholly new and remarkable portrait of Brown as an idiosyncratic iconoclast, determined artist, and forceful businessman. It is a rare look into a world little known to white America immediately following the Civil Rights Movement. Leeds discovers that Brown is a fascinatingly complex man and their experiences, both business and personal, range from emotional to humorous. All the while, they navigate the complicated world of popular black music in America, told by someone who actually lived it.
