Synopsis

In "Billy Whiskers' Adventures," Frances Trego Montgomery crafts a delightful narrative centered around the escapades of a spirited goat named Billy Whiskers. Written in a whimsical, engaging style that reflects the early 20th-century children'Äôs literature, Montgomery'Äôs prose is rich in vivid imagery and characterization. The story combines adventure with moral lessons, as Billy navigates various challenges, befriending animals and humans alike, all while exploring themes of loyalty and bravery. The book encapsulates the charm of animal-centric stories that were popular in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, appealing to both young readers and adults seeking nostalgia. Frances Trego Montgomery, an American author born in 1866, was known for her contributions to children's literature, particularly in crafting animal protagonists. Old Rambling House by Frank Herbert - All the Grahams desired was a home they could call their own ... but what did the home want?
On his last night on Earth, Ted Graham stepped out of a glass-walled telephone booth, ducked to avoid a swooping moth that battered itself in a frenzy against a bare globe above the booth.
Ted Graham was a long-necked man with a head of pronounced egg shape topped by prematurely balding sandy hair. Something about his lanky, intense appearance suggested his occupation: certified public accountant.
He stopped behind his wife, who was studying a newspaper classified page, and frowned. "They said to wait here. They'll come get us. Said the place is hard to find at night."
Martha Graham looked up from the newspaper. She was a doll-faced woman, heavily pregnant, a kind of pink prettiness about her. The yellow glow from the light above the booth subdued the red-auburn cast of her ponytail hair.
"I just have to be in a house when the baby's born," she said. "What'd they sound like?"
"I dunno. There was a funny kind of interruption—like an argument in some foreign language."
    "Did they sound foreign?"
"In a way." He motioned along the night-shrouded line of trailers toward one with two windows glowing amber. "Let's wait inside. These bugs out here are fierce."
"Did you tell them which trailer is ours?"

And then a major misstep leaves Jordan and Caroline trapped together overnight—inside Daphne's, the world's largest department store. Hickory, Dickory, Dock!
The mouse ran up the clock.
    The clock struck one,
    The mouse ran down,
    Hickory, Dickory, Dock!
WITHIN the hollow wall of an old brick mansion, away up near the roof, there lived a family of mice. It was a snug little home, pleasant and quiet, and as dark as any mouse could desire. Mamma Mouse liked it because, as she said, the draught that came through the rafters made it cool in summer, and they were near enough to the chimney to keep warm in winter-time.
Besides the Mamma Mouse there were three children, named Hickory and Dickory and Dock. There had once been a Papa Mouse as well; but while he was hunting for food one night he saw a nice piece of cheese in a wire box, and attempted to get it. The minute he stuck his head into the box, however, it closed with a snap that nearly cut his head off, and when Mamma Mouse came down to look for him he was quite dead. The story becomes better after this somber opening, trust me. Find out why those mice ran up that clock.
