Beschreibung

When orphaned Mary Lennox comes to live at her uncle's great house on the Yorkshire Moors, she finds it full of secrets. Left to make her own entertainment, Mary stumbles upon a garden, overgrown and locked for years. A forbidden garden.
Finding her way inside, with the help of a friendly robin, Mary begins to feel a connection to the house and its inhabitants. Then, one night, in one of the house's many rooms, she hears the sound of crying…
Frances Hodgson Burnett's delightful and enduring tale celebrates the power of transformation and healing through nature. Elizabeth Newman's magical adaptation was premiered at Pitlochry Festival Theatre's open-air amphitheatre in 2023, where Newman is Artistic Director.
This version will appeal to other professional and amateur companies looking for a much-loved classic that can be easily staged in theatres, outdoor venues – and gardens.
'An enriching, affirmative show, steeped in gentle wonder' – The Stage
'A near-perfect summer theatre experience for children… The Secret Garden is fast emerging as a key children's story for our time: a profound legend about how human beings need the natural world and its energy to survive and thrive… Newman's adaptation glows from its opening moments with love for, and understanding of, the basic dynamics of Hodgson Burnett's bold narrative… a beautiful show' – The Scotsman
'Enrapturing… a tremendous fervour of pace… simply gorgeous… a thing of beauty' – Reviews Hub
'Retains all the essentials of the original novel but brings in the whole thing at around 90 minutes, including an interval. It's appealingly crisp, which is helpful for the younger members of the audience, and it doesn't shun the novel's all-important use of Yorkshire dialect… a play that retains its own distinctive sense of charm' – WhatsOnStage
'The perfect show for all the family… delights at every turn… a salve to the soul for grown ups in these troubled times and even better, the children in the audience clearly loved it' – Broadway Baby

From a prize-winning poet, a new collection that chronicles a weekend in the life of a group of friends coming of age in East Harlem at the dawn of the hip-hop era

Willie Perdomo, a native of East Harlem, has won praise as a hip, playful, historically engaged poet whose restlessly lyrical language mixes “city life with a sense of the transcendent” (NPR.org). In his fourth collection, The Crazy Bunch, Perdomo returns to his beloved neighborhood to create a vivid, kaleidoscopic portrait of a “crew” coming of age in East Harlem at the beginning of the 1990s. In poems written in couplets, vignettes, sketches, riffs, and dialogue, Perdomo recreates a weekend where surviving members of the crew recall a series of tragic events: “That was the summer we all tried to fly. All but one of us succeeded."

“This immersive poetry collection proceeds like a mixtape or a gnostic gospel … Oracular, intoxicating … Perdomo’s vibrant diction refashions the high lyric, drawing on local cant to render the intimacy of home, friendship, and shared loss. Part rhapsody, part elegy, the book memorializes neighborhood legends, and, even as it impishly indulges nostalgic romance, it never forgets, or forgives, the violence that threatens these young lives.”—The New Yorker

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, writing came naturally to Christal Kahles at a young age. Being a child, her hobbies were to write a story rather than to play in the grass with the other children. Finally, when Christal was 12 years of age, she began work on her first "real" book, but she never imagined that this book was only the start of her calling. Realizing she had a gift of writing, she began entering poems in writing competitions, and has gone on to write screenplays and short stories as well. 'I didn't expect it so soon, that's all. It made it seem so final, all our lives, those decisions all irreversible, immortalised in a slideshow to a Coldplay track.'
Helen is forty when she loses her husband. Her daughter Becca is fifteen when her dad dies. Now it's just the two of them... what do they do next?
Unfolding through snapshots of a relationship over forty years, Helen explores the threads which bind mother and daughter together, how they damage each other, and how they come to each other's rescue.
A play for two actors – about love, grief, and getting ashes stuck to your trouser leg – Helen by Maureen Lennon was shortlisted for the 2020 Theatre503 International Playwriting Award. It was first produced at Theatre503, London, in 2023, in a co-production with Terrain, a company dedicated to promoting Northern artists and the stories they tell.

Elinor Morton Hoyt was born on 7th September, 1885 in Somerville, New Jersey and from age 12 grew up in Washington D C where her father served as assistant attorney general and later solicitor general. Her early education together with her renowned beauty suggests she was being trained for life as a debutante but her life quickly found another route as she became absorbed in the world of books.

An early marriage following her graduation ended when, after being pursued by Horace Wylie, 17 years her senior and a married Washington lawyer with three children, she eloped to England with him. His wife would not divorce him and the subsequent scandal was widely publicised further fueled by the suicide in 1912 of her abandoned husband.

With Wylie's encouragement she published in 1912, ‘Incidental Number’, assembled from poems of the previous decade.

Despite a child from her first marriage Elinor subsequently endured miscarriages, a stillbirth and a premature child who lived for only one week. When Wylie’s deserted wife agreed to a divorce, the couple returned to the United States and married but they were already drawing apart.

In 1921, Elinor’s ‘Nets to Catch the Wind’, was published. It was an immediate success and a prize-winner. In New York’s literary circles she found her next husband who acted as her agent – the poer William Rose Benét, brother of the famed Stephen. They married in 1923 and that same year ‘Black Armor’, was published. The New York Times said "There is not a misplaced word or cadence in it." She also published her first of four novels, ‘Jennifer Lom’, to excellent reviews.

She worked for a time as the poetry editor of Vanity Fair, an editor of Literary Guild, and a contributing editor of The New Republic. Her third book of poetry, ‘Trivial Breath’ arrived in 1928 as did the failure of her marriage with Benét.

She moved again to England and fell in love with a friend’s husband, to whom she wrote, and later published a series of 19 sonnets; ‘Angels and Earthly Creatures’.

Elinor Wylie suffered high blood pressure all her adult life and this eventually led to her death at Benet’s New York apartment on 16th December, 1928 where she suffered a stroke. She was 43.
