Sinopsis

Frances Burney's "The Complete Novels of Fanny Burney (Illustrated Edition)" offers a nuanced collection of her groundbreaking works, showcasing the evolution of the modern novel. Burney's literary style is characterized by her sharp wit, intricate characterizations, and penetrating social commentary, which brilliantly illuminate the complexities of 18th-century British society. As a precursor to the feminist novel, her narratives deftly explore themes of female agency, class distinctions, and the tension between personal desire and societal expectations. The inclusion of illustrations enriches the reading experience, allowing for a deeper engagement with the text. Frances Burney, a prominent literary figure of the late 18th century and early 19th century, paved the way for future novelists such as Jane Austen and Charlotte Brontë. The daughter of a musicologist, Burney grew up in a culture of artistic expression, which sparked her own literary ambitions. Her keen observations of the lives and tribulations faced by women in her time, alongside her experiences in the salons of Georgian society, contributed to her unique voice in literature, making her works both personal and universal. For readers seeking to explore the intricacies of human relationships and the socio-political landscape of the era, Burney's complete novels are essential. Richard Bernard Heldmann was born on 12th October 1857, in St Johns Wood, North London.

By his early 20’s Heldmann began publishing fiction for the myriad magazine publications that had sprung up and were eager for good well-written content.

In October 1882, Heldmann was promoted to co-editor of Union Jack, a popular magazine, but his association with the publication ended suddenly in June 1883. It appears Heldman was prone to issuing forged cheques to finance his lifestyle. In April 1884 he was sentenced to 18 months hard labour.

In order to be well away from the scandal and the damage that this had caused to his reputation Heldmann adopted a pseudonym on his release from jail. Shortly thereafter the name ‘Richard Marsh’ began to appear in the literary periodicals. The use of his mother’s maiden name as part of it seems both a release and a lifeline.

A stroke of very good fortune arrived with his novel ‘The Beetle’ published in 1897. This would turn out to be his greatest commercial success and added some much-needed gravitas to his literary reputation.

Marsh was a prolific writer and wrote almost 80 volumes of fiction as well as many short stories, across many genres from horror and crime to romance and humour. His unusual characters, plotting devices and other literary developments have identified his legacy as one of the best British writers of his time.

Richard Marsh died from heart disease in Haywards Heath in Sussex on 9th August 1915. He was 57.

The south country beckoned, and Gabe and Ezra answered.

Their purpose was derailed when an unexpected ambush by Apache would prompt a rescue expedition. A vivid and haunting collection of interconnected stories, Winesburg, Ohio portrays a cast of isolated individuals in a small midwestern town at the end of the 19th century. Central to the book is George Willard, a young newspaper writer, to whom a variety of Winesburg’s residents, past and present, attempt to confide their secret desires, failures and innermost truths. Through George we encounter Wing Biddlebaum, run out of another town because of his ‘expressive’ hands; Reverand Curtis Hartman and his incoherent account of religious epiphany; and Doctor Parcival and his strange philosophies such as the supposed ‘secret of life’. A profound exploration of loneliness and the quiet struggle for human connection, Winesburg, Ohio transformed the American short story, shifting the focus from plot to the emotional lives of ordinary people.
