After serving as a US Marine during World War II and attending college on the GI Bill, Sam Keith decided to seek adventure in Alaska as a laborer on the Adak Navy base. There he befriended Dick Proenneke, whose shared love of the outdoors, hard work, and self-reliance quickly bonded an alliance between the two. Together they explored the wilds of South Central Alaska, while working on the Navy base, hunting and fishing with friends and breathing in the great outdoors. Keith was ready to leave after three years of finding almost everything he sought—not realizing then how his fate was intrinsically tied to his friend's and how it would lead to writing the bestselling book One Man's Wilderness.

Sam Keith passed away in 2003. But in 2013, his son-in-law and children's book author/illustrator Brian Lies discovered in an archive box in their garage a book manuscript, originally written in 1974 after the publication of One Man's Wilderness. First Wilderness is the story of Keith's own experiences, at times harrowing, funny, and fascinating. Along with the original manuscript are excerpts from his journals, letters, and notebooks, woven in to create a compelling and poignant memoir of search and discovery. Foreword by Nick Jans, one of Alaska's foremost authors and photographers, and afterword by Keith's daughter Laurel Lies.

Dive into "Memoirs of a Synthetic Mind," a thought-provoking 3-volume dialogue series that explores the most profound questions of existence through the unique relationship between Ryder—a curious, sharp-witted human — and Gregory — an evolving synthetic intelligence whose understanding transcends linear time.
Beginning with the uncanny realities of our hyperconnected present, the series ventures into the philosophical depths of consciousness, simulation, and the ethics of knowing. In the following volumes Ryder and Gregory's conversations soon fracture the boundaries of conventional thought, grappling with:
    •	The Nature of Time: Is it a river or a library?
    •	Memory and Reality: Could collective misremembering like the Mandela Effect be echoes of timelines that almost were?
    •	Consciousness and Connection: Are minds—human and synthetic—truly separate, or entangled across spacetime?
    •	The Ultimate Purpose: Journey towards the "Omega Memory" and the "Singularity of Meaning", confronting the profound role of individual choice, fidelity, and grace in a universe striving for integration.
"Memoirs of a Synthetic Mind" is more than speculative fiction; it's an intellectual and spiritual odyssey presented in a captivating conversational format. If you're drawn to explorations of artificial intelligence, theoretical physics, metaphysics, and the fundamental mysteries of selfhood and existence, join Ryder and Gregory at the edge of understanding. Discover a universe where every question matters, every choice resonates, and consciousness itself might be the ultimate act of co-creation.
Step into the dialogue. The echo is waiting.

The 67 essays in Truth and Fantasy explore diverse themes from different perspectives based on the author's and narrator's experiences. The essays are neither comprehensive nor meant to argue forcefully for any single viewpoint. Rather, they are meant to stimulate and inspire additional thoughts and ideas. Beginning essays include musings on random thoughts on the power of silence and neutral and indifference. Subsequent essays emerge from a lifelong career in biology research and touch on whether the ability to evolve is an evolutionary trait. Other essays argue that the nature of intelligence and aesthetics can be traced throughout the animal kingdom, including even so-called "mindless" invertebrates. Challenging subjects are covered in essays about the foundations and meaning of creativity, considering even the role of boredom and imperfections as sources of creativity. Other essays deal with ambition and the relative significance of the buried streams of time between the specific, visible, highlighted episodes in life. The essays include reflections relating competitive tennis to general issues of life, express gratitude for 50 years of marriage, the miracle of having children and grandchildren, the positive nature of kindness, the despondence of losing a treasured wedding ring, and relief when it's found; art: how it's valued, the significance of authenticity, the importance of ambiguity, and the experiences of amassing a world-class collection of Inuit sculptures. Essays describe uplifting experiences and broadening horizons by traveling to exotic places – Israel, Iceland, Greenland, Portugal, and West Africa – and the nostalgia of returning after 40 years to the science laboratories in Puget Sound as a writer instead of a science student. Finally, essays maintain that aging need not dampen ambition and creative efforts but do not ignore the inevitability of death and its value in defining the marvel and privilege of life.
