"What Rama says once he carries out; there is no looking back.” Rama to Kaikeyi “Only the timid and the weak leave things to destiny but the strong never bank on destiny or luck.” Lakshmana to Rama

The epic poem, by Maharishi Valmiki Muni, narrates the life of Lord Rama, a legendary prince of Ayodhya city in the kingdom of Kosala. The epic follows his fourteen-year exile to the forest urged by his father King Dasharatha, on the request of Rama's stepmother Kaikeyi. He traveled across forests in the Indian subcontinent with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana. Rama endured the kidnapping of Sita by Ravana – the demon king of Lanka, which resulted in a great war; and Rama's eventual return to Ayodhya to be crowned king amidst jubilation and celebration. The Ramayana is one of the ancient epics in world literature consisting of nearly 24,000 verses. It is considered to be the Adi-kavya (first poem) depicting the duties of relationships, portraying ideal characters like the ideal father, ideal servant, ideal brother, ideal husband and ideal king. The Ramayana was an important influence on later Sanskrit poetry and Vedic life and culture. There are many versions of Ramayana in Indian languages, besides Buddhist, Sikh, and Jain adaptations. There are also Cambodian (Reamker), Indonesian, Filipino, Thai (Ramakien), Lao, Burmese and Malay versions of the iconic tale.

As the first Black woman to anchor the Boston-area evening news, Liz Walker found herself in an industry that defined the neighborhood of Roxbury largely by violence. But when she became a pastor there, Walker grew close to households marked not only by trauma but by courage—including the family of Cory Johnson, a young father who was murdered. In the wake of their worst nightmare, the family reached out for help.

As Walker's congregation invited neighbors to gather, they created soft spaces for others' grief to land. There, in the stories told, the meals shared, the tears shed, and the silences kept, people found a space to receive their sorrow. Out of this ministry grew a grassroots trauma-healing program, one now being replicated across the country.

Through this groundbreaking book, begin to imagine what story-sharing groups might look like in your context. Face the disparity of grief that comes from racism and systemic inequality, and learn to confront legacies of harm. Discover the healing power of listening, as well as the art and skills of accompanying someone in pain. Further, grasp how caregivers, pastors, counselors, and other healers—many with their own wounds—can benefit from soft spaces too.

The human brain is an impossibly complex and delicate instrument—capable of extraordinary calculations, abundant creativity, and linguistic dexterity. But the brain is not just the most brilliant of evolutionary wonders. It's also one of the most bizarre.

This book shows a whole other side of how brains work—from the patient who is afraid to take a shower because she fears her body will slip down the drain to a man who is convinced he is a cat and a woman who compulsively snacks on cigarette ashes.

As fascinating as they are, the cases discussed in this book are more than just oddities. In attempting to understand them, neuroscientists have uncovered important details about how the brain works. You'll be intrigued and amazed by some of the weird things your brain does on a daily basis, seemingly without your awareness or consent, and maybe you'll even gain an increased appreciation for the stability of the reality you experience. This book is ideal both for listeners seeking a better appreciation of the inner workings of the brain and those who simply want some extraordinary topics for dinner-party conversation.

The human brain is often described as the most intricate and remarkable organ in the known universe. It serves as the control center for every thought, emotion, movement, and sensation we experience, seamlessly integrating billions of neural connections to create the essence of who we are. Despite centuries of scientific inquiry, the brain remains a profound mystery—an organ that not only governs our basic survival but also fuels creativity, innovation, and the very consciousness that allows us to ponder its complexity.
What makes the brain so fascinating is its duality: it is both fragile and resilient, capable of extraordinary feats yet vulnerable to a wide range of disorders. Its 86 billion neurons form networks that enable everything from the rhythmic beating of the heart to the abstract contemplation of art, philosophy, and science. This complexity has driven countless researchers to explore its depths, seeking to understand how such a compact structure can hold the vastness of human thought, memory, and emotion.
Throughout history, our understanding of the brain has evolved dramatically. Early civilizations believed that the heart was the seat of intelligence, while the brain was considered secondary. It wasn’t until the work of ancient scholars like Hippocrates and later neurologists such as Thomas Willis and Santiago Ramón y Cajal that the brain was recognized as the epicenter of human experience. Today, advanced imaging technologies allow us to observe the brain in action, mapping areas responsible for speech, movement, and even complex emotions. Yet, for all our progress, we have only begun to scratch the surface of its potential.
