Synopsis

What Is Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion

Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) is a process that makes use of the temperature difference that exists in the ocean between the deeper, cooler waters and the warmer, shallower or surface waters in order to power a heat engine that generates useful work, most commonly in the form of electricity. OTEC is able to function with a capacity factor that is very high, and as a result, it is able to function in base load mode.

This “lucid, masterfully written introduction to an often difficult subject . . . belongs on the bookshelf of every student of statistical physics” (Dr. Brian J. Albright, Applied Physics Division, Los Alamos National Laboratory).

This book provides an accessible introduction to stochastic processes in physics and describes the basic mathematical tools of the trade: probability, random walks, and Wiener and Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes. With an emphasis on applications, it includes end-of-chapter problems.

Physicist and author Don S. Lemons builds on Paul Langevin’s seminal 1908 paper “On the Theory of Brownian Motion” and its explanations of classical uncertainty in natural phenomena. Following Langevin’s example, Lemons applies Newton’s second law to a “Brownian particle on which the total force included a random component.” This method builds on Newtonian dynamics and provides an accessible explanation to anyone approaching the subject for the first time.

This volume contains the complete text of Paul Langevin’s “On the Theory of Brownian Motion,” translated by Anthony Gythiel.

Andrew Fusek Peters has spent five years travelling around the UK to document and celebrate British butterflies. In Butterfly Safari, he shows butterflies in a new light, capturing close-ups of wing scales and the delicate structure of eggs, eyes and antennae. He has also pioneered never-before-seen flight shots and astonishing aerial sequences. Many of these photos have already appeared in the national papers and magazines.

'With so many of our butterflies in decline, this is a very timely book by one of the country's best photographers. It's a must-have for the bookshelves!' Iolo Williams

'This book captures the glorious beauty and heart-lifting spirit of butterflies better than any other.' Patrick Barkham, author of The Butterfly Isles

'This book acptures the beauty and movement of butterflies like no other. The flight sequences are sublime - they are pure poetry in motion.' Dr Martin Warren, former Chief Executive of Butterfly Conservation

This book contains two topics, which are the following:1 - Memory Improvement: The ability for the brain to encode, store, and recall information is known as memory. Experience serves as a roadmap for future action.Memory includes both consciously recalled facts and experienced details as well as deeply embedded knowledge that pops up without thought or even awareness. It serves as both a temporary information storage space and a more lasting record of what has been learned.2 - The study of the anatomy and operation of the nervous system and the brain is known as neuroscience. To map the brain mechanistically, neuroscientists draw on cellular and molecular biology, anatomy and physiology, human behavior and cognition, and other fields. Each neuron, or brain cell, in an adult human has an estimated 100 billion connections to other neurons. The mapping of all the cell-to-cell communication networks—the brain circuits that process all ideas, feelings, and behaviors—remains one of the major difficulties of contemporary neuroscience. The resulting image that gradually forms is referred described as "the connectome." All learning is based on the brain's capacity to build new neural circuits and connections, or neuroplasticity.

A Louisiana historian presents the definitive history of Plaquemines Parish, the rich land that encompasses the mouth of the Mississippi River. “Way down yonder, at the mouth of the Mississippi River sits a land like no other on this continent. A land occupied by man but belonging to a force greater than he.” So begins Janice P. Buras’ history of Louisiana’s Plaquemines Parish (County). Land, however, is an imprecise term. The Plaquemines could be more accurately described as marsh, or swamp, or even water. Yet this isolated area has also been home to people of many different cultures throughout the history of Louisiana. With some of the most fertile soil in the world, the varieties of plant life found in Plaquemines are almost as numerous as the many stories that arise on its riverbanks. In her crusade to spread the word about her beloved Plaquemines Parish, Buras has published a monthly magazine highlighting its people and events. Now this dedicated local historian has written the definitive history of this unique corner of the world.
