Synopsis

What Is Differential Evolution

In the field of evolutionary computation, differential evolution, also known as DE, is a method that optimizes a problem by iteratively trying to improve a candidate solution with relation to a specific measure of quality. DE is an abbreviation for the term "differential evolution." These kinds of procedures are typically referred to as metaheuristics since they make very few or no assumptions about the issue that is being addressed and are able to search very huge spaces of potential solutions. However, metaheuristics like as DE do not guarantee that the best solution will ever be discovered.

In *From Mines to Milestones*, Michael Metsemakers takes readers on a gritty, unfiltered journey through the mining industry in the vast, rugged outback of Western Australia. Born in a small country town, Michael never imagined he'd one day be operating 600-ton excavators, but his relentless drive and passion for heavy machinery propelled him through the ranks of Australia’s mining operations.
Starting as an 18-year-old roller operator with no knowledge of the industry, Michael quickly adapted to the unique challenges of the FIFO lifestyle. His story captures the highs and lows of working in harsh environments, the thrill of mastering powerful machinery, and the struggle to balance career and family life.
Now a father, Michael faces his toughest challenge yet: leaving the mines behind to be with his son and experience life’s most important milestones at home. In this memoir, he shares not only the technical aspects of his career but also the personal sacrifices, triumphs, and decisions that shaped his path.
With honesty and humility, Michael recounts his rise through the industry, offering a raw look at the determination it takes to succeed, the friendships formed in remote camps, and the emotional weight of a life lived between shifts in the outback and moments with loved ones.

Gen Z's first "existential toolkit" for combating eco-guilt and burnout while advocating for climate justice.

A youth movement is reenergizing global environmental activism. The "climate generation"—late millennials and iGen, or Generation Z—is demanding that policy makers and government leaders take immediate action to address the dire outcomes predicted by climate science. Those inheriting our planet's environmental problems expect to encounter challenges, but they may not have the skills to grapple with the feelings of powerlessness and despair that may arise when they confront this seemingly intractable situation.

Drawing on a decade of experience leading and teaching in college environmental studies programs, Sarah Jaquette Ray has created an "existential tool kit" for the climate generation. Combining insights from psychology, sociology, social movements, mindfulness, and the environmental humanities, Ray explains why and how we need to let go of eco-guilt, resist burnout, and cultivate resilience while advocating for climate justice. A Field Guide to Climate Anxiety is the essential guidebook for the climate generation—and perhaps the rest of us—as we confront the greatest environmental threat of our time.

To achieve fossil fuel independence, few technologies are more important than batteries. Used for powering zero-emission vehicles, storing electricity from solar panels and wind turbines, and revitalizing the electric grid, batteries are essential to scaling up the renewable energy resources that help address global warming. But given the unique environmental impact of batteries—including mining, disposal, and more—does a clean energy transition risk trading one set of problems for another?

In Charged, James Morton Turner unpacks the history of batteries to explore why solving "the battery problem" is critical to a clean energy transition. As climate activists focus on what a clean energy future will create the history of batteries offers a sharp reminder of what building that future will consume. With new insight on the consequences for people and communities on the front lines, Turner draws on the past for crucial lessons that will help us build a just and clean energy future, from the ground up.

In the Company of Grace - A...

    Jody Lulich

Rising to accept a prestigious award, Jody Lulich wondered what to say. Describe how caring for helpless, voiceless animals in his own shame and pain provided a lifeline, a chance to heal himself as well? Lulich tells his story in In the Company of Grace, a memoir about finding courage in compassion and strength in healing—and power in finally confronting the darkness of his youth.

Lulich's white father and Black mother met at a civil rights rally, but love was no defense against their personal demons. His mother's suicide and his sometimes brutal father's subsequent withdrawal set Lulich on a course from the South Side of Chicago to the Tuskegee School of Veterinary Medicine in Alabama to an endowed chair at the University of Minnesota. Though shadowed by troubling secrets, his memoir also features scenes of surprising light and promise. Most consequentially, at Tuskegee Lulich rents a room in the home of a seventy-five-year-old Black woman named Grace, whose wholehearted adoption of him—and her own stories of the Jim Crow era—finally gives him a sense of belonging and possibility.

Completing his book amid the furor over George Floyd's murder, Lulich reflects on all the ways that race has shaped his life. In the Company of Grace is a moving testament to the power of compassion in the face of seemingly overwhelming circumstances.
