What is Air Power History

Air power history is the branch of military history that analyses and chronicles the activities of air forces as well as the other organisations, including the air branches of armies and navies, that undertake military aviation. It is essential knowledge for professional airmen and is taught not only in air force academies and command and staff colleges, but also in joint academies and colleges. Jerry Portnoy grew up in Chicago hearing the blues being played outside his father's rug store on famed Maxwell Street during the late 1940s and early '50s. After dropping out of college, he became immersed in the colorful world of pool hustlers as he managed the largest pool hall in Chicago. During a stint as a paratrooper early in the Vietnam war, he applied for discharge as a conscientious objector, and lived in San Francisco during 1967's "summer of love." While bumming around Europe the following year, Portnoy heard the blues again on a record by Sonny Boy Williamson and became obsessed with mastering blues harmonica. He returned to Chicago and in 1974 he was playing in small Black clubs at night when Muddy Waters plucked him from his day job at Cook County Jail to fill the harmonica chair in his fabled band. Eric Clapton followed suit in 1991. In a career that took him from ghetto taverns to the White House and the Royal Albert Hall, he went from the raggedy vans and cheap roadside motels of the blues world to the private jets and five-star hotels of the rock world. Between those two very different gigs was a struggle to survive the vagaries of the music business and the pressures of life on the road. In a remarkable life, he also assisted in surgery, lodged in a Moroccan house of ill repute, and dined at Giorgio Armani's.

‘You Only Need Permission from Yourself’ is an honest and empowering look at what it means to heal, grow, and live life on your own terms. Through personal stories and deep reflection, Jaynette Lancaster invites readers to question the silent rules they’ve been taught and to let go of the belief that anyone else holds the key to their happiness or success. This book speaks directly to those who’ve been told to stay quiet, play small, or wait for permission. Jaynette challenges that mindset with warmth and clarity, drawing from her own journey through heartbreak, emotional abuse, professional pressure, and the raw work of rebuilding. She shares how she found strength in vulnerability, clarity in solitude, and peace in choosing herself—over and over again. Each chapter explores a different piece of the healing puzzle, from understanding emotional conditioning to navigating mental health, building resilience, and reclaiming your voice. Jaynette’s message is clear: your story matters, your voice is valid, and your life belongs to you. Written with honesty, compassion, and grit, ‘You Only Need Permission from Yourself’ is both a mirror and a guide for anyone ready to stop seeking outside validation and start living with intention. It’s not just a book. It’s a call to finally choose yourself—and mean it.

But few people know the true story behind the Trolls. In recent years, a completely different and factually untrue version of the Trolls' story has been created.
In this book Thomas Dams grandson, Jep Andre Laponnel (former manager of the Troll Company) will now set the record straight and tell the true story as it really happened. Told by those who actually created the success. Stories are best heard straight from the horse’s mouth, as they say, and not from people with ulterior motives. This book has it all
The book has it all - from creator Thomas Dam’s poor roots to the foundation of the troll factory. You will find fun anecdotes and small unknown facts about the trolls and Thomas. And you will read about how the fantastic worldwide success of the trolls was created.  You’ll also encounter family drama that you’ll hardly believe is true. A drama worth a Hollywood movie.

Pioneer, activist, environmentalist, poet. Ethel Haythornthwaite is virtually unknown, even in her home town of Sheffield – the UK's outdoor city – yet her tireless campaigning led to the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949 and the creation of the Peak District National Park, protecting a wild and varied landscape so many have fallen in love with. Founder of a local society to protect rural scenery in 1924, she went on to join the Council for the Preservation of Rural England (CPRE) and become its wartime director. Saviour of the beautiful Longshaw estate, her achievements also include establishing the first green belt in the UK.
In Ethel, award-winning author Helen Mort explores the life of this countryside revolutionary who has been overlooked by history. Born into wealth yet frugal, ever restless but infinitely patient, widowed at twenty-two, independent and thoroughly ahead of her time, Ethel Haythornthwaite helped save the British countryside at a time when simply to be a woman was challenge enough.
Having been given unrestricted access to Ethel's archive, including hundreds of meticulously written letters, in Ethel, Helen Mort has written letters to Ethel's memory and a paean to her legacy. The beauty and accessibility of the British countryside is the result of passionate campaigning during the inter- and post-war years by groundbreaking figures such as Ethel Haythornthwaite.
