Synopsis

What Is Affective Computing

The study and development of systems and technologies that are capable of recognizing, interpreting, processing, and simulating human affects is what is known as affective computing. It is a multidisciplinary field that includes computer science, psychology, and cognitive science among its subfields. Although the roots of some of the field's fundamental concepts may be traced all the way back to early philosophical investigations into emotion, the more contemporary area of computer science can be traced back to Rosalind Picard's work on affective computing that she released in 1995 and her book Affective Computing that was published by MIT Press. The capacity to provide robots emotional intelligence, particularly the ability to simulate empathy, is one of the goals for the study that is being done. The computer should be able to interpret the emotional state of humans and modify its behavior to them in order to provide an appropriate reaction to the emotions being displayed by the humans.

How the World Flows acts like a microscope that pulls the listener into the barely noticeable, Lilliputian world of fluids at small scales—the microfluidic world—and answers the question "What is microfluidics?" in non-technical language.Microfluidics is the field of science that studies fluids constrained to spaces that are smaller than one millimeter wide, and by extension, the engineering field which builds devices that exploit the unique properties of fluids at these scales. Author Albert Folch explores this micro science which has inspired engineers to build devices such as engines, spray cans, ballpoint pens, inkjet and 3D printers, pregnancy and Covid tests, glucometers, asthma nebulizers, kidney dialysis machines, and DNA analyzers. This book also shows that many processes essential to life on Earth—such as the formation of raindrops, the rise of sap in plants, and the percolation of water through soil—are all microfluidic marvels. It examines how our cells breathe, feed, and fight diseases through small capillaries. Through engaging and digestible stories, Folch takes a lens to this tiny science and demonstrates how big a role microfluidics play in life as we know it.

America was built on white pine. From the 1600s through the Civil War and beyond, it was used to build the nation's ships and houses, barns, and bridges. Yet this popularity came at a cost: by the end of the nineteenth century, clear cutting had decimated much of America's white pine forests. In White Pine, ecologist and writer John Pastor takes listeners on walk through history, connecting the white pine forests that remain today to a legacy of destruction and renewal.

Since the clear-cutting era, naturalists, foresters, and scientists have taken up the quest to restore the great white pine forests. White Pine follows this centuries-long endeavor, illuminating how the efforts shaped Americans' understanding of key scientific ideas, from forest succession to the importance of fire. Pastor shows us why restoring the vitality of these forests has not been simple: a host of other creatures depend on white pine and white pine depends on them. In weaving together cultural and natural history, White Pine celebrates the way humans are connected to the forest—and to the larger natural world.

Today, white pine forests have begun to recover, but face the growing threat of climate change. White Pine shows us that hope for healthy forests lies in understanding the lessons of history, so that iconic species survives.
