Synopsis

One essential ingredient in a successful campfire meal is a good campfire story. Nikki has peppered this book with stories based on true events. Some of these happened to her and some to campers she's shared a fire with. Needless to say, names have been changed to protect the innocent and downright stupid. A great cookbook and a great read around a campfire.

For many years, Saint-Germain-des-Prés has been a stronghold of sans culottes, a refuge to artists, a paradise for bohemians. It's where Marat printed L'Ami du Peuple and Thomas Paine wrote The Rights of Man. Napoleon, Hemingway, and Sartre have all called it home. Descartes is buried there. Now bestselling author and Paris expert John Baxter takes listeners on a narrative tour of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, which is also where Baxter makes his home.Tucked along the shores of the Left Bank, Saint-Germain-des-Prés embodies so much of what makes Paris special. Its cobblestone streets and ancient facades survive to this day, spared from modernization thanks to a quirk in their construction. Traditionally cheap rents attracted outsiders and political dissidents from the days of Robespierre to the student revolts of the 1960s. And its intellectual pedigree boasts such luminaries as Pablo Picasso, Arthur Rimbaud, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Simone de Beauvoir, Gertrude Stein, and Albert Camus.Part-history, part-guidebook, Saint-Germain-des-Prés is a fresh look at one of the City of Light's most iconic quarters, and a delight for new tourists and Paris veterans alike.

John Muir made four trips to Alaska, as far as Unalaska and Barrow. Muir, Mr. Young and a group of Native American Guides first traveled to Alaska in 1879 and were the first Euro-Americans to explore Glacier Bay. Muir Glacier was later named after him. He traveled into British Columbia a third of the way up the Stikine River, likening its Grand Canyon to "a Yosemite that was a hundred miles long". Muir recorded over 300 glaciers along the river's course. He returned for further explorations in southeast Alaska in 1880 and in 1881 was with the party that landed on Wrangel Island on the USS Corwin and claimed that island for the United States. He documented this experience in journal entries and newspaper articles—later compiled and edited into his book The Cruise of the Corwin. In 1888 after seven years of managing the Strentzel fruit ranch in Alhambra Valley, California, his health began to suffer. He returned to the hills to recover, climbing Mount Rainier in Washington and writing Ascent of Mount Rainier.

Follow Stick Man through a disastrous day in this hilarious adventure inspired by real signs.

Stick Man is that guy you see around town but don’t really know very well. Everywhere you go, there he is, crossing the street, waiting for the bus, issuing warnings about potential disasters at sea and on land, at the mall and at work. But when he’s not offering advice, what does a day in the life of Stick Man actually look like? This catastrophe-packed book uses images derived from real signs to follow a continuous narrative as Stick Man navigates the perils of a single, hilariously bad day. Everyone has had that day that just keeps getting worse, but Stick Man’s adventures show readers both what a bad day really looks like, and that in the end it’s never really quite as bad as it may seem. It’s the perfect pick-me-up for when life, or a forklift, knocks you down.

A collection of articles, based on modern science, using force free and fear free methodsSolutions to common issues from pre-puppy to adulthoodThe book is a compilation of articles written by these professionals on various aspects of puppy and dog ownership, care, training, and managing and treating behavior problems. As such, you do not need to read the book cover to cover, but the articles are compiled in such a way that it will take you through in a sensible order if that's what you wish to do. Alternatively, you can skip to whichever issue you wish to look up and read articles about it. If previous knowledge of a preceding article is required, it is usually mentioned in the article you're reading.A Collaboration of Force-Free ProfessionalsIt is good to see some articles referring back to others written by a different author, proving that this is indeed a collaboration between like-minded professionals and the advice isn't coming from a singular source. All of the writers do well at maintaining an overall ‘tone' but of course, they write as individuals so you do get different voices. You may find you prefer some to others.Despite a generally professional voice, the tone is friendly, and at (appropriate) times, humorous. From a grammar perspective, it is well written, so easy to read.Something for EveryoneSome of the articles are brief and provide a quick and easy read; others are more lengthy, but the formatting and editing breaks them up well with subheadings making the text much easier to take in.The advice is well presented without complex jargon and easy for anyone to take in, from people brand new to dog training to seasoned professionals looking for another way of presenting their information or an alternative method. Easy to understand anecdotes and comparisons help people to understand their dogs' perceptions of situations.
