  The first specimen of megamouth shark (megachasma pelagios) was discovered on November 15, 1976, when it was found entangled in the drag anchor of a U.S. Navy ship. The new creature wasn't described scientifically until 1983…The megamouth remains the only species in its genus, and the only genus in its order.”  
  	That discovery was a reminder that the oceans of the world have always had an air of mystery. About 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, and until the 20th century no one had plumbed its depths. Even today the bigger seas and oceans remain a largely unexplored frontier, with new species being discovered every year. Thus it comes as no surprise that countless legends have arisen of strange creatures lurking in the depths.  
  	Of course, the most famous serpent of them all supposedly dwells in Scotland. While cryptids like Bigfoot and the Yeti have become popular in recent decades, none of them can touch the notoriety of the Loch Ness Monster, a large, unknown creature allegedly living in a loch in the Highlands of Scotland. Was it a relic dinosaur or perhaps an entirely new species? New photographs and new eyewitness sightings fueled a growing debate and transformed the Loch Ness Monster, also known as Nessie, into an instantly recognizable staple of pop culture, to the extent that hundreds of thousands of visitors came to Loch Ness every year in hopes of catching a glimpse of the loch’s famous inhabitant.

  San Francisco's Transgender District, six blocks in the Tenderloin, was founded in 2017 by three black trans women. The first trans and gender nonconforming residents in the area were two-spirit residents of the Ramaytush Ohlone territory. After the founding of San Francisco, trans individuals continued to live, perform, advocate, and gather in the area. 
  Some members of the trans community gained fame and fortune in local vaudeville theaters and performing in drag. Others regularly navigated issues with the police, landlords, and local businesses. The 1906 earthquake dramatically reshaped the neighborhood when Market Street was destroyed. José Julio Sarria, local clergy, "Screaming Queens," the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Ms. Billie Cooper, and many others helped the trans community find glitter in the ashes and recover from hardship. The Transgender District includes the site of the first trans and queer uprising at Compton's Cafeteria and Glide Memorial Church, the site of the first transgender support group in the United States. 
  Rev. Dr. Megan Rohrer, an activist, award-winning historian, and finalist for the Lambda Literary Award in transgender nonfiction, leads regular walking tours of the district. Images in this book come from his personal collection, museums, archives, and local photographers.

  Philosophy of Race - A Primer

  It was not until the early 1900s that the idea emerged of a philosophy dealing specifically with issues of race. Unsurprisingly, the philosophy of race was begun by people of color. Philosophy considers race in terms of its social construction, and it analyzes the cultural and moral effects of attitudes toward race. The philosophy of race deals with how ideas and attitudes about race developed and seeks to understand race relations in the context of social and moral philosophy. The critical philosophy of race analyzes and critiques racism, systemic racial hierarchies, and the ways that the racialization of society effects ideas, values, practices, and social institutions. 
  Similar to feminist philosophy and its focus on gender constructs, critical philosophy of race has a focus on the role of racism and racial hierarchies in shaping the historical patterns of thought and society. Critical philosophers of race acknowledge the ways in which white-dominated social traditions have excluded people of color, and critical philosophy of race is an attempt to decode often veiled words and ideas that power racial hierarchies and attitudes with an eye toward changing those traditions and decreasing racial injustices. It is also critical in calling for an end to the denial of society’s past and ongoing racism, including an end to racial segregation, exploitation, and genocide. Being philosophers, critical philosophers of race are especially critical of philosophy’s denial of its own racial past.
