Sinopse

The pandemic, the climate crisis, work – today's world isn't short of challenges. Social injustice. And technology that is slowly but steadily creeping into every aspect of our lives. But what if the answers to the big questions aren't found in simplistic technocracy or a mood of the-end-is-nigh?

Florian Hoffmann is a founder and social entrepreneur. For years, he has been talking to, and working with, people around the world who, like himself, want to make a contribution to a more sustainable, fairer and positive future.

In Our New World (Die Neue Welt), he takes the reader on an expedition to the places and people that have already arrived in this future: young entrepreneurs, innovators, founders and leaders who are courageously shaping a better world.

Florian Hoffmann demonstrates the huge potential for creating a better future today. He visits places and people around the world, where courage and imagination have already paved the way for the world of tomorrow. Beacons for the way ahead, these role models encourage readers to take their own steps into the New World. Many are breaking down the border between earning money and making a positive contribution, and are asking, more generally: What impact can I have, now and in the future? How can my success offer others new chances?

The journalist Saba is fighting for girls' and women's right in Pakistan. Niall dumps his high-flying job to find a solution for microplastics pollutions. Lily wants to inspire people to take up life-long learning – and develops scenarios for what future jobs might look like. These are some of the many diverse voices who believe in a better future.

Graceful Simplicity: The Foundations of Bread and Roses Socialism is a new audiobook prepared with an eye on the 2024 Presidential elections. The author, Jerome Segal, is challenging Joe Biden for the nomination of the Democratic Party. The audiobook is primarily the first audio of Dr. Segal’s seminal 1999 book, Graceful Simplicity: The Philosophy and Politics of Simple Living. The original book made two main contributions to the literature on simple living. First, it argued that beauty and creative expression should be counted among our basic needs, and their fulfillment part of what simple living aspires to. Secondly, it argued that simple living should be thought of as more than a life-style choice. Rather, it should animate a new politics, one which places making the option of simple living relevant to people at all parts of the income spectrum, the central goal of socio-economic policy. Concretely, this means making it possible for people on a minimum wage to meet their core needs (including beauty) on 4 or even 3 days of Job System work per week.Starting when he first ran for public office in 2018, Dr. Segal went from writing about the need for a politics of simplicity to actually pursuing one. Over time he came to use the term “Bread and Roses socialism” to characterize his political program, and came to call himself, a bread and roses socialist. The new audiobook opens with a 25 page preface that explains the transition from “graceful simplicity” to “bread and roses socialism” as well as the conceptual linkage between the two concepts.Graceful Simplicity (1999) was a Book of the Month Club selection, and was translated into Danish and Chinese.

1975: A young Irish-American man joins an elite US Marine unit to get the most intensive military training possible—then joins the Irish Republican Army, during the days of some of the bloodiest fighting ever in the Irish-British conflict.

In a powerful, brutally honest recounting of his experience, John Crawley details, first, the grueling challenges of his Marine Corps training, then how he put his hard-earned skills to use back in Ireland in service of the Provos. It is a story that will see him running guns with notorious American mobster—and secret IRA fundraiser—Whitey Bulger; running, under cover of night, from safe house to safe house in the Irish countryside, one step ahead of British troops; being captured, imprisoned, and being part of a mass escape attempt; fending off a recruitment offer from the CIA; and being one of the masterminds behind a campaign to take out London's electrical system.

Along the way, Crawley is blisteringly candid about the memorable people he worked with, including behind-the-scenes portrayals of revered IRA leader Martin McGuinness, and of the psychopathic Whitey Bulger, as well as others in the Boston IRA support network. There are vivid portraits of colleagues and enemies, and Crawley is unflinching in his commentary on IRA leadership and their tactics, both military and political.

The conquest of Constantinople in 1453 by a besieging army of around 80,000 men led by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II ended the Byzantine Empire. The city's defense was in the hands of Emperor Constantine XI, who had 7,000 to 10,000 soldiers at his disposal and, likely, fell during the last storm on the city. The fall of the Byzantine Empire also marked the final rise of the Ottoman Empire to become a major power. The conquest has a high symbolic value in both Turkish and Western European reception; Depending on one's perspective, it is viewed as evidence of imperial greatness or as a beacon of decay and demise. In historiography, the conquest of Constantinople is sometimes cited as one of the events that marked the transition from medieval Europe to modern times.

Imagine the possibilities if instead of avoiding the things you feared, you approached them with courage and curiosity.

When we are in the grip of fear, our world can get very small and for many of us, the number of choices shrink to just four basic reactions: fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. That’s not a lot of options. On a collective level, elements of our society like governments, religions, and businesses sometimes instill fear to divide and control—to keep us feeling dependent on them instead of ourselves. On an individual level, fear can be the reason we’re living a life that’s not reflective of our truth or potential. It’s what keeps us feeling stuck and holds us back. What most of us don’t realize is that fear has much to teach us.

“Fear Technician” Guryan Tighe reframes the way we approach fear from the goal of conquering it to a goal of learning from it by providing readers three gateways to look at fear in a way that frees us: curiosity, gratitude, and purpose. She shows us how to interrupt our initial reaction, pause, check in with ourselves, and rewrite the patterns we use to respond to that which we fear. With this shift in thinking and how to engage it, readers will find new pathways forward as they shift from unintentional reactions to intentional responses.

When we change our relationship to fear, we gain valuable insights that inform our growth and development, connecting us more deeply to our truth. This different approach to fear doesn’t just transform our relationship with ourselves but can also unite us with others through empathy and shared purpose. What has the power to separate us from ourselves and each other—fear—also has the power to unite us. Unmasking Fear shows us that fear is courage unrealized and understanding our fears frees us to pursue the life we want.

“For anyone in the grip of fear, or longing for deeper connection to themselves and others, this book will propel you towards greater clarity, confidence and peace.”—Randy Taran, author of Emotional Advantage and founder/CEO of Project Happiness.org

More than 5 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer's disease or a related form of dementia. By the year 2030, experts estimate that as many as 66 million people will be faced with this life-altering disease. These statistics impact millions of caregivers. Compared with all types of caregivers, those who assist someone with dementia experience the highest levels of burnout, depression, poor health, and premature death. A Dignified Life, Revised and Expanded offers hope and help.

Ten years ago, the first edition of A Dignified Life changed the way the caregiving community approached Alzheimer's disease by showing caregivers how to act as a Best Friend to the person. Firmly grounded in the latest knowledge about dementia, this expanded edition offers a wealth of tips and advice.

While medical treatment of the disease hasn't changed, our understanding and awareness of treating people in a more caring way has changed. With no cure, respectful care by effective and compassionate care partners is the only real "treatment" available. The Best Friends Approach is successful because it sustains people's connection to their world, their loved ones, and themselves. A Dignified Life shows how to bring dignity, meaning, and peace of mind to the lives of both those who have Alzheimer's and dementia and those who care for them.
