    A Room in Bombay - A Memoir

    Manil Suri

'Rooms in Bombay are not big in size, but huge in heart. Manil Suri's memoir will make you want to hug your mother. Written in clean, direct prose and without sentimentality, it explores all the dimensions of the complicated bond between parent and child -- while also being laugh-out-loud funny. If you were born of a mother, read this book.' -- Suketu Mehta
'Written with a rare blend of compassion and honesty, Manil Suri's memoir dares to map the death of Bombay's most potent and seductive dream: the redevelopment of real estate. We watch with sick fascination as the lives of a dashing young man who wants to sing for Bollywood and his headstrong and practical wife implode into ill health, and we ache for their son who makes his escape to the US but must deal with his guilt. This is a Bombay story like few others.' -- Jerry Pinto
'A deeply affecting memoir in which the ""room"", like a prison of the mind, acquires the force of metaphor-a symbol of all that we must escape in order to be more truly ourselves, and all that we never quite can.' -- Aatish Taseer

'This room that has been my crucible, controlled and tormented and driven me-how much has it shaped my history, my current self?'
Author Manil Suri grows up in a large, crumbling flat in Bombay which his Hindu parents share with three Muslim families. Their single room is a refuge from the religious and territorial tensions ravaging the apartment. But it is also a prison that holds them captive -- one that makes Manil's playback-singer father drift towards alcoholism and his mother towards increasing isolation, while restraining Manil from exploring the dawning realization that he might be gay.
As the shared room shapes the consciousness of its residents, we find ourselves asking: Will Manil manage to break free from the flat and find the freedom to embrace his sexuality? Will his mother dare step beyond the threshold of an unfulfilling marriage to pursue deeper, riskier joys?
Set against the backdrop of a fast-transforming city, where the price of real estate keeps rising and neighbours conspire to take over any available space, A Room in Bombay is as much about a physical enclosure as it is about the human capacity to reach beyond through the sheer power of imagination. At its heart, this is a deeply moving memoir -- drawn from over 2,700 letters Manil wrote to his mother across three decades -- that bears testimony to the abiding, unbreakable bond tying mother and son.

    Essays: First Series Intellect

    Ralph Waldo Emerson

Intellect is not a possession but a force—fluid, expansive, untamed. It cannot be hoarded, nor can it be caged within doctrine or tradition. In Intellect, Ralph Waldo Emerson urges us to see thought as a living current, not a stagnant pool. True understanding, he suggests, is not about collecting knowledge but about breaking through to deeper insight, where intuition leads and logic follows.
Emerson's vision of the mind defies confinement. He challenges the idea that intelligence is something fixed, something to be measured or owned. Instead, he sees it as a ceaseless motion, a self-renewing energy that thrives on boldness and independence. To think freely is to embrace the unknown, to risk uncertainty in pursuit of wisdom.
Part of Essays: First Series, Intellect is a call to let go of borrowed opinions and trust the mind's own unfolding. It is not a guidebook, not a doctrine—it is an invitation to intellectual courage. To read it is to reconsider not only what we think but how we think.

'You don’t have to be able to hum Mozart to find this book utterly engrossing . . . I couldn’t put it down' - Joanna LumleyAn expertly researched and vividly written account of Mozart’s formative trips to Italy. At thirteen years old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a child prodigy who had captured the hearts of northern Europe, but his father Leopold was now determined to conquer Italy. Together, they made three visits there the last when Mozart was seventeen, all vividly recounted here by acclaimed conductor Jane Glover.Father and son travelled from the theatres and concert salons of Milan to the church-filled streets of Rome to Naples, poorer and more dangerous than the prosperous north, and to Venice, the carnivalesque birthplace of public opera. All the while Mozart was absorbing Italian culture, language, style and art, and honed his craft. He met the challenge of writing Italian opera for Italian singers and audiences and provoked a variety of responses, from triumph and admiration to intrigue and hostility: in a way, these Italian years can be seen as a microcosm of his whole life.Evocative, beautifully written and with a profound understanding of eighteenth-century classical music, Mozart in Italy reveals how what he experienced during these Italian journeys changed Mozart – and his music – for ever.

‘I Love You, Byeee is poignant and properly funny; a bracing dip into nostalgia, but self-aware, too.’ Observer
The long-awaited new memoir and follow-up to the bestselling Ramble Book.
Hey, how you doing, casual browser? Adam Buxton here. Are you ready for some hot hyperbole about this book? Here we go …
In I Love You, Byeee, the highly anticipated follow up to the bestselling Ramble Book, I reminisce with hilarious and heartwarming candour about the highs and lows of working with Joe Cornish and revolutionising the worlds of DIY TV and podcasting in the process.
You’ll hear about my crazy times hanging out with notorious rock’ n’ roll hellraisers like Travis and Radiohead. I write with humour and heartbreaking poignancy about the challenges of parenting, losing my mother (to death, that is – we didn’t get separated in a shop) and the drug hell that led to me nearly dying in the arms of a comedy legend. There’s also a bit about arguing with my wife, getting instructions on edginess from Louis Theroux, going on Bake Off and much more that you didn’t ask for but definitely need.
For all that, plus hours of bonus waffle and original music, why not download the audiobook, too?
Phew! I think we both need a shower after that. Take care – I love you, byeee!
In I Love You, Byeee, Adam Buxton shares his journey from television to the world of internet and webcasting. This autobiography is a captivating exploration of his life in the arts, making it a top pick for fans of non-fiction memoirs.
