Beschreibung

Stockholm Saga explores the captivating history of Stockholm, Sweden, revealing how its unique blend of Viking heritage, innovative design, and distinctive island landscape has shaped its Scandinavian identity. The book traces the city's evolution from a strategic Viking trading post to a modern metropolis, highlighting key events and cultural shifts.

One intriguing aspect is how Stockholm's geographical setting, spread across fourteen islands, has profoundly influenced its urban planning and architectural styles. It also examines Stockholm's significant impact on global design trends, emphasizing the principles of functionality, simplicity, and sustainability that define Swedish design.

The book adopts a narrative non-fiction approach, blending historical accuracy with engaging storytelling. Starting with the Viking era, it progresses through the medieval period and the rise of the Swedish Empire, ultimately examining Stockholm's contemporary status as a global city. It demonstrates how history, design, and environment are intertwined, creating a cohesive narrative of Stockholm's cultural and urban development.

Many White Christians feel convicted when they hear of racial injustice but aren't sure what they can do. They often become overwhelmed by deep divisions, conflicting priorities, and historical burdens. They need a clearer vision for engagement with racial justice and reconciliation that goes beyond easy answers or simplistic optimism. Isn't there anyone who has found a way forward?

Anthropologist Christine Jeske has studied precisely this question. Her one-of-a-kind research started by asking people of color about their work and experience with White advocates of racial justice. She then studied the postures, ideas, and actions of those they recommended as positive examples.

In Racial Justice for the Long Haul, Jeske presents her findings on what makes for an effective, enduring approach, revealing shared threads in the lives of White Christians who have faithfully embraced the call to advocate for justice. By abandoning simplistic answers and confronting the depths of suffering and injustice, they discover a bold way of hope that perseveres. This book features a unique methodology of interviews with Christian leaders of color and White advocates, makes qualitative ethnographic research accessible, and provides concrete examples of how White Christians can grow―and persist―in working for racial justice.

Between World War II and 1980, tens of thousands of Black people moved to Boston from the South as part of the Great Migration, one of the most consequential mass movements of people in American history. Black migration from the South transformed the city, as it did urban areas across the country. North to Boston is the first book to examine that important subject.

Blake Gumprecht traces the history of this migration and explores its impacts in greater depth through the lives of ten individuals, each the subject of one chapter. Those chapters are short biographies based on extensive interviews by the author and are told in an engaging style that reflects the author's background as a journalist.

The ten people featured came from six southern states. They fled racism, limited opportunity, and hopelessness, and moved north in pursuit of better jobs, equal treatment, and greater freedom. They settled in neighborhoods such as Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan. They worked as teachers, factory workers, welders, and security guards. Their stories are emblematic of the experiences of Black people everywhere who left the South, and provide a rare glimpse into the lives of ordinary people living in one city's Black community.

Did you know that Shah Jahan once planned to build another Taj Mahal in his empire?
The Taj Mahal is renowned for its exceptional architecture that infuses elements from various influences around the world, including the magnificence of Mughal, Persian, and Islamic architectural styles.
Shah Jahan, the reigning emperor of the Mughal Empire, had been plagued with sadness following the death of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. And so, as a parting gift to her, the mourning emperor commissioned the construction of a grand mausoleum made of white marble.
Upon completion, the Taj Mahal stood on the banks of the Yamuna River, impressing those who gazed at its marvelous façade glimmering under the bright sun. A reflective pool enhanced its perfections, but it was the mausoleum’s symmetrical design that captivated many. The symmetry could be seen in each corner of the complex except for Mumtaz Mahal’s extravagant tomb chamber—the symmetrical design was broken when Shah Jahan’s cenotaph was added years later.
Some said it was intentional, while others claimed Shah Jahan never intended to be buried beside his wife. Legend has it that the emperor was planning to build another mausoleum for himself that mirrored the Taj Mahal; it was to be placed across from the Taj Mahal and made of black marble. However, whether this is true remains a debate. Ancient sources contradict each other, which can be confusing for curious readers.
But that is about to change. With this all-new history audiobook, you can easily explore the gripping events that led to the construction of the Seven Wonders of the New World.
