  The Kingdom of Kongo emerged as one of the most powerful and centralized states in Central Africa. Its origins can be traced back to the early Bantu migrations, which spread agriculture, ironworking, and complex social structures across the region. By the 14th century, various smaller chiefdoms in present-day Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo began to coalesce under a single authority, forming what would become the Kingdom of Kongo. 
  The region’s fertile lands and access to major rivers facilitated both agriculture and trade. Kongo’s early economy relied on the cultivation of crops such as millet, sorghum, and bananas, as well as the production of iron tools and weapons. The abundance of natural resources allowed the ruling elite to accumulate wealth and expand their influence. As trade networks developed, Kongo became a center of commerce, linking the interior regions of Central Africa with coastal markets. 
  Kongo's social and political organization was highly structured. At the top of the hierarchy was the king, known as the Manikongo, who ruled from the capital, Mbanza Kongo. The Manikongo exercised authority over provincial rulers, who governed different regions of the kingdom. This system allowed for centralized administration while also granting local leaders autonomy in managing their territories. The kingdom was further divided into districts and villages, with a bureaucratic structure that ensured tax collection, military organization, and judicial functions.

  Amos was one of the Twelve Minor Prophets. An older contemporary of Hosea and Isaiah, Amos was active c. 760-755 BCE during the rule of kings Jeroboam II of Israel and Uzziah of Judah. He was from the southern Kingdom of Judah but preached in the northern Kingdom of Israel. Amos wrote at a time of relative peace and prosperity but also of neglect of God's laws. He spoke against an increased disparity between the very wealthy and the very poor. His major themes of justice, God's omnipotence, and divine judgment became staples of prophecy. The Book of Amos is attributed to him.

  The pandemic’s unparalleled scale of mortality created a sense of collective trauma that shaped the mindset of medieval society.   Sunset, 8 June 1982, East Falkland. Eight specially trained Royal Marines infiltrate Goat Ridge, a long rocky hilltop between Mount Harriet and Two Sisters which are occupied by a battalion of 600 Argentine infantry. Their daring mission was to hide out in hostile territory, reconnoiter the Argentine position and then report back. From their hiding place just metres away from the enemy, they note and sketch the Argentine positions, then withdraw as stealthily as they had come. Their daring patrol provides essential intelligence that guided the British assault which overwhelmed the Argentine defences two days later.This was just one example of the missions undertaken by the Royal Marines Mountain and Arctic Warfare Cadre during the Falklands War, all of which are described in graphic detail in Rod Boswell's eyewitness account.
