Synopsis

"A gal has to look out for herself after all"
Clara Grey's parents once said that the world was a dark and dangerous place. There was more truth than fiction to those words. There were things that lurked in the shadows which defied the laws of nature: perversions that fed on the dead, terrorised the living, or escaped the chill touch of the grave.
Clara is a member of the Tower, a religious order of hunters who work outside the confines of the Church. As keepers of the arcane, her order takes an active role to counter these threats. The life of a hunter can be short, and many disappear before their training is complete. So, what does it take to succeed against all odds?
Explore Clara's origin, a child born before the dawn of the twentieth century. Witness her rigorous training, how she faces adversity, and fights in the Great War to become the derringer wielding flapper she is.
Throughout her tale, keep in mind that no matter the threat, a gal has to look out for herself after all.

The small town of Harrod’s Reach has seen its fair share of the macabre, especially inside the decrepit old train tunnel around which the town was built. After a young boy, Sully Dupree, is injured in the abandoned tunnel and left in a coma, the townspeople are determined to wall it up. Deputy sheriff Beth Gardner is reluctant to buy into the superstitions until she finds two corpses at the tunnel’s entrance, each left with strange calling cards inscribed with old lullabies. Soon after, Sully Dupree briefly awakens from his coma. Before falling back into his slumber, Sully manages to give his older brother a message. Sully's mind, since the accident, has been imprisoned on the other side of the tunnel in Lalaland, a grotesque and unfamiliar world inhabited by evil mythical creatures of sleep. Sully is trapped there with hundreds of other coma patients, all desperately fighting to keep the evils of the dream world from escaping into the waking world. Elsewhere, a man troubled by his painful youth has for years been hearing a voice in his head he calls Mr. Lullaby, and he has finally started to act on what that voice is telling him—to kill any coma patient he can find, quickly. Something is waking up in the tunnel—something is trying to get through. And Mr. Lullaby is coming.

War in Heaven is the first novel Charles Williams published, and also his most comic. The Holy Graal has been stolen and the magician who stole it is up to no good—wanting to use it to amply his own powers for his nefarious ends. An Anglican archdeacon steals it back, and together with a Catholic duke, they seek to keep it safe. When the magician blackmails the archdeacon all seems lost—and that's when Prester John shows up... War in Heaven is everything you've come to expect from a Williams novel—suspense, supernatural danger, and a Mysticism so real and good and terrible that nothing can stand against it.

Here lie four remarkable ghost stories, carefully culled from a genre that had a great flowering in the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They have been chosen because they are skillfully written; the reader—like the protagonists—is drawn slowly and inexorably into a nightmare that seems all the more credible because the world in which it happens is ordinary, filled with realistic detail. In addition, each of the four authors employs consideration psychological insight, so that the tales operate on multiple levels. The length of these stories has prevented them from being frequently anthologized. Aficionados of ghost stories are in for a treat! Included in this collection: "The Beckoning Fair One" by Oliver Onions, "How Love Came to Professor Guildea" by Robert Hichens, "The Old Nurse's Story" by Elizabeth Gaskell, "Couching at the Door" by D.K. Broster
