Beschreibung

Strange Movie Lawsuits explores the high-stakes legal battles behind the silver screen, focusing on copyright infringement and right of publicity claims. These cases often determine the extent to which filmmakers can adapt real-life stories or borrow from existing works. For example, lawsuits frequently dissect plot points to distinguish between inspiration and outright theft, highlighting the complexities of entertainment law. The book uniquely combines legal analysis with engaging storytelling, making complex concepts accessible to a broad audience interested in film, true crime, and the ever-evolving world of Hollywood.

The book's narrative approach dissects several high-profile lawsuits, presenting specific facts, legal arguments, and rulings to illustrate key legal principles like fair use. Disputes over "life rights" reveal how much of one's personal narrative is truly owned, raising fundamental questions about creative freedom versus individual rights. Understanding these cases is crucial for anyone in the film industry, as they expose the inherent conflict between artistic expression, corporate interests, and personal claims.

The book progresses by first introducing relevant legal concepts, then dissecting specific lawsuits, and finally analyzing the broader implications for the film industry. By examining these legal dramas, Strange Movie Lawsuits provides valuable insights into the tensions inherent in commercial storytelling and the unpredictable outcomes that can reshape Hollywood's practices.

New Zealand, known as Aotearoa in Māori, is a land rich in history and cultural significance. Located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, this island nation is renowned not only for its stunning landscapes but also for the diverse stories that have shaped its identity. The history of New Zealand is marked by the migration of its first inhabitants, the Māori, and the later arrival of Europeans, both of whom have contributed to the country’s unique social and cultural fabric.
The Māori people, the first to settle the islands, arrived from eastern Polynesia between the 9th and 13th centuries. Their journey to New Zealand is a story of exploration, resilience, and connection to the land. The Māori developed a sophisticated society with rich traditions, strong spiritual beliefs, and a deep connection to the natural world. Their oral histories, cultural practices, and the Māori language (Te Reo Māori) continue to shape the nation’s identity to this day.
The arrival of Europeans in the 17th century, particularly the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman and later Captain James Cook, marked the beginning of profound change for the Māori and the land itself. European settlers, driven by the promise of economic opportunities, eventually established colonies in the 19th century. This period saw the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, an agreement that aimed to establish a partnership between the Māori and the British Crown. Despite its noble intentions, the treaty's implementation and interpretation have been subjects of contention and legal battles for decades, particularly regarding Māori land rights.

A biography chronicling one man’s service during World War II as a Royal Navy commander and his career before & after in the tea business. Jake Wright’s initiation to war was on the beach at Dunkirk, helping evacuate stragglers. Then volunteering for Motor Torpedo Boats, he served with valor throughout World War II, becoming one of only forty-four officers in WWII to receive a DSC with two Bars . . . Derek Wright learned about small boats from his father, who tragically died when Derek was just fourteen years old. Sent away from his family to finish his education, he left school at sixteen to join the global tea trade. Soon after he finished his training with Brooke Bond, famous for their “Dividend” tea, Hitler invaded Poland and Britain was at war. By then known to his friends as “Jake,” he was one of the first Volunteer Reserves to be called up to fight for his country. Plucked from his naval training in HMS King Alfred, his warfighting initiation was on the beach at Dunkirk, helping evacuate stragglers after Operation DYNAMO. He then volunteered for Motor Torpedo Boats, where he served with valor and distinction. While Hitler’s U-Boats were torpedoing shipments of tea bound for Great Britain, Jake Wright reciprocated by torpedoing Axis coastal shipping off Europe. His first Command was MTB 331, trained for a daredevil mission to puncture German boom defenses protecting their battleships. In his next Command, MTB 32, he was wounded in action whilst torpedoing a German convoy, but kept his small ship fighting against the odds to win the action and sink his enemy; for his bravery he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Further acts of gallantry in action, combined with tactical innovation, saw him earn two bars to his DSC as well as a Mention in Despatches; he became one of only forty-four officers in the Second World War to receive a DSC with two Bars. After demobilization he returned to the tea trade, rising to become one of Brooke Bond’s senior directors supplying Britain’s beloved beverage. He even helped refine how to make the perfect cup of tea. This is the life story of a determined, brave, innovative, and decorated officer who has earned a place in the hearts of our nation. It is the story of Derek “Jake” Wright, DSC**.Praise for Torpedoes, Tea, and Medals “A must read . . . an enthralling look at motor torpedo boat operations off the coast of France and Belgium during World War II.” —Naval Historical Foundation “Wright clearly had a really action-packed war and this book skillfully combines his coastal forces experiences with his influential role in the tea business.” —Captain Andrew Welch, FNI, Royal Navy Retired
