The book uniquely combines industry data with qualitative analysis to understand why futuristic narratives resonate so strongly today. One intriguing insight is how sci-fi reflects societal anxieties about technological advancements, offering a safe space to explore complex issues like environmental concerns and political instability. The book examines the evolution of science fiction themes, analyzing their adaptation to changing technological landscapes and sociopolitical dynamics. It traces the genre’s historical development from literature to its current dominance, noting the influence of scientific progress and digital technologies. By examining these trends, the book provides a comprehensive overview of key concepts and historical milestones, making it accessible to a broad audience interested in media studies and the social science aspects of film and television.

Structured to build understanding progressively, the book begins by introducing core sci-fi concepts, then delves into the evolution of its themes through case studies of influential works. It culminates by examining the practical implications of science fiction's popularity. This approach, combined with its data-driven analysis, distinguishes "Sci-Fi Popularity Growth" as a valuable resource for students, scholars, and industry professionals seeking insights into the science fiction market and its societal influence.

Deborah is a British First World War tank that rose from the grave after taking part in one of the most momentous battles in history. In November 1917, she played a leading role in the first successful massed tank attack at Cambrai. Eighty years later, in a remarkable feat of archaeology, the tank's buried remains were rediscovered and excavated, and are now preserved as a memorial to the battle and to the men who fought in it. John Taylor's book tells the tale of the tank and her crew and tracks down their descendants to uncover a human story every bit as compelling as the military one.

  • Fall of the Assyrian Empire The: The History and Legacy of Ancient Assyria’s Violent Destruction - cover

When scholars study the history of the ancient Near East, several wars that had extremely brutal consequences (at least by modern standards) often stand out. Forced removal of entire populations, sieges that decimated entire cities, and wanton destruction of property were all tactics used by the various peoples of the ancient Near East against each other, but the Assyrians were the first people to make war a science. When the Assyrians are mentioned, images of war and brutality are among the first that come to mind, despite the fact that their culture prospered for nearly 2,000 years.
Like a number of ancient individuals and empires in that region, the negative perception of ancient Assyrian culture was passed down through Biblical accounts, and regardless of the accuracy of the Bible’s depiction of certain events, the Assyrians clearly played the role of adversary for the Israelites. Indeed, Assyria (Biblical Shinar) and the Assyrian people played an important role in many books of the Old Testament and are first mentioned in the book of Genesis: “And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel and Erech, and Akkad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. Out of that land went forth Ashur and built Nineveh and the city Rehoboth and Kallah.” (Gen. 10:10-11). Although the Biblical accounts of the Assyrians are among the most interesting and are often corroborated with other historical sources, the Assyrians were much more than just the enemies of the Israelites and brutal thugs.
