Synopsis

History of Stunts explores the captivating evolution of stunt work in cinema, from its slapstick origins to today's complex action sequences. It highlights how technological advancements, like sophisticated rigging and motion capture, have redefined the boundaries of what's possible on screen. Simultaneously, the book examines the increasing emphasis on safety standards and regulations, reflecting a growing appreciation for the value and vulnerability of stunt performers.

The book looks into how early pioneers, such as Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd, laid the groundwork for modern stunts. It traces the development of specialized equipment, from early airbag systems to contemporary CGI, and analyzes their impact on the realism and complexity of action sequences.

The narrative progresses chronologically, beginning with the silent film era and moving through the Golden Age of Hollywood, the rise of Hong Kong action cinema, and finally, an examination of contemporary stunt work and its future.

Think Oasis was just Britpop and brawls?
    Think again.
John Robb was there every step of the way. From the estates of South Manchester to the dizzying heights of global stardom, Live Forever is a rollercoaster ride through the Gallagher brothers’ turbulent lives and the music that defined a generation. But it is also a portrait of Britain around the turn of the millennium and the cultural forces and places that shaped, and were shaped by, two cocksure upstarts from Burnage – from art to fashion, and from football to politics.

It was 1969, and Miles Davis, prince of cool, was on the edge of being left behind by a dynamic generation of young musicians, an important handful of whom had been in his band. Rock music was flying off in every direction, just as America itself seemed about to split at its seams. Following the circumscribed grooves and ambiance of In A Silent Way; coming off a tour with a burning new quintet—called ‘The Lost Band’—with Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette; he went into the studio with musicians like frighteningly talented guitarist John McLaughlin, and soulful Austrian keyboardist Joe Zawinul. Working with his essential producer, Teo Macero, Miles set a cauldron of ideas loose while the tapes rolled. At the end, there was the newly minted Prince of Darkness, a completely new way forward for jazz and rock, and the endless brilliance and depth of Bitches Brew.Bitches Brew is still one of the most astonishing albums ever made in either jazz or rock. Seeming to fuse the two, it actually does something entirely more revolutionary and open-ended: blending the most avant-garde aspects of Western music with deep grooves, the album rejects both jazz and rock for an entirely different idea of how music can be made.

"I'm as pure as the driven slush." – Tallulah Bankhead
Exhibitionism and narcissism coupled with talent are not the sole property of modern entertainment, as some might suppose. From the beginnings of American theater and film, various personality types prone to self-intoxication by the status of their own careers have acted-out at will in their public lives. For them there is no barrier between the professional and the private.
In the early years of the 20th century, members of a clique residing at the Algonquin Hotel in New York City were emblematic of a shocking behavioral rebellion against societal norms. Led by humorist Dorothy Parker and others, they defended and glorified extremes of outspoken sexual expression and contrary lifestyles. In doing so, they became a popular source of entertainment in themselves, with behavior flying in the face of the normal decorum of the time. To those most staid in society, they represented the perfect foil for the righteously indignant, while to the titillated masses, they were a constant presence in the news of the day, and perversely admired for their brazenness.
Tallulah Bankhead was a latecomer to the Algonquin Circle, and even the most hardened social rebels were not sure what to make of her. Demonstrating an early talent for the stage, Bankhead went on to stardom in live theater, film, radio, and early television. She was among the most parodied public figures of her time and could always be counted upon to shock by bringing her private behavior into the public arena of entertainment.
At the same time, Bankhead had no qualms voicing her opinions about current events and hot button political topics, which often came at the expense of her own family, a fixture in Alabama politics. She became an avid supporter of the Civil Rights Movement, and that, along with her background in show business, helped land her on various lists.
