Synopsis

"Fake Movie Myths" tackles the pervasive misinformation surrounding cinema, separating fact from fiction in film history and popular culture. It explores how certain movie "facts," like the ubiquity of the Wilhelm Scream, gain traction and become accepted truths despite lacking evidence. The book delves into why these film myths are so easily believed, examining the psychological factors and social forces that shape our perception of movies and Hollywood.

Each chapter of "Fake Movie Myths" dissects specific categories of these myths, such as on-set incidents or casting controversies, providing factual evidence and expert opinions to reveal the truth. It highlights the importance of critically examining the stories we tell ourselves about film history to gain a deeper understanding of the art form. By debunking these false narratives, the book aims to restore accuracy and promote a more nuanced appreciation of cinematic achievements.

The book progresses by first introducing core concepts of film myth-making, then dedicating individual chapters to specific myths. The book concludes with a discussion of the broader implications of film myths, including their role in shaping popular culture. This unique approach combines rigorous research with accessible storytelling, offering critical viewing strategies to help readers discern fact from fiction in their own film experiences.

An arresting and one-of-a-kind memoir about the alternately exultant and harrowing trip growing up as a Black child desperate to create a clear reality for herself in this country
Written in a distinctive voice and filled with personality, humor, and pathos, Fruit Punch is a memoir unlike any other, from a one-of-a-kind millennial talent. Growing up in Dallas, Texas, in the nineties and early 2000s, Kendra Allen had a complicated, loving, and intense family life filled with desire and community but also undercurrents of violence and turmoil. “We equate suffering to perseverance and misinterpret the weight of shame,” she writes. As she makes her way through a world of obscureness, Kendra finds herself slowly discovering outlets to help navigate growing up and against the expected performance of being a young Black woman in the South—a complex interplay of race, class, and gender that proves to be ever-shifting ground.
Fruit Punch touches on everything from questions of beauty and how we form concepts of ourselves—as a small rebellion, young Kendra scratched a hole into every pair of stockings she was forced to wear—to what it means to grow up in her great uncle’s Southern Baptist church—with rules including “No uncrossed ankles” and “No questions.” Inflected by a powerful sense of place and touched by poetry, Fruit Punch is a stunning achievement—a memoir born of love and endurance, fight or flight, and what it means to be a witness, from a blisteringly honest and observant voice.

    Anthony Hope

Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins was born on 9th February 1863 in Clapton, London.
He was educated at St John's School, Leatherhead, Marlborough College and Balliol College, Oxford. Hope trained as a lawyer and barrister and was called to the Bar by the Middle Temple in 1887. Despite what was thought to be a promising legal career he had literary ambitions and wrote in his spare time.
His early works appeared in various periodicals of the day but for his first book ‘A Man of Mark’ (1890), with no publisher interested, he published with his own resources.
More novels and short stories followed, including the mildly successful ‘Mr Witt's Widow’ in 1892. Hope even found time to run as the Liberal candidate for Wycombe in the election that same year but was unsuccessful.
His first major literary success came with ‘The Dolly Dialogues’, a collection of previously published magazine pieces followed very quickly by his instant classic, ‘The Prisoner of Zenda’. He now gave up the vestiges of his legal career to pursue writing full-time.
Despite never again reaching the same pinnacle of success he was popular and wrote prolifically across novels, plays and of course, short stories though his writing output rapidly diminished after the war.
In 1918 he was knighted for his contribution to propaganda efforts during World War I.
His short stories are delicate, mannered and often surprising with their wit, humour and interplay of characters who say one thing and usually mean another. He was very definitely a writer of escapist rather than serious fare but they are no less enjoyable for that.
Anthony Hope died of throat cancer on 8th July 1933 at his country home, Heath Farm at Walton-on-the-Hill in Surrey. He was 70.
