Beschreibung

Comics Code Repeal explores the seismic shift in LGBTQ representation within mainstream comic books following the decline of the Comics Code Authority (CCA). The book argues that the CCA's weakening was a pivotal moment, unleashing unprecedented freedom in depicting diverse sexual orientations and gender identities.

Initially established to combat perceived juvenile delinquency, the CCA's rigid restrictions inadvertently stifled creativity and perpetuated harmful stereotypes; for instance, any positive representation of LGBTQ individuals was essentially banned.

The book uniquely combines industry history with social commentary, examining how the comic book industry evolved to reflect societal shifts like the gay rights movement. The book traces the evolution of LGBTQ representation in comics, examining key milestones and groundbreaking works, contrasting early LGBTQ visibility in underground comix with its mainstream evolution.

It unfolds by first introducing the history and purpose of the CCA, followed by an in-depth analysis of its impact on content. It leverages archival research, comic book analysis, and interviews to support its central argument: the decline of the CCA catalyzed increased diversity, inclusivity, and artistic innovation within the medium.

The book concludes with a discussion of the lasting legacy of the CCA's decline, highlighting ongoing challenges and opportunities for LGBTQ representation in comics and its wider implications.

Once, in a place called Gaza, Jewish families lived among gardens, vineyards, and the peaceful sound of the sea. It was a land filled with beauty and hope. The Jewish people who lived there loved their homes, their schools, and their neighborhoods.
In a spirit of peace, the Jews gave this land to their Palestinian neighbors, hoping it would be the beginning of friendship. But sadly, instead of peace, the leaders called Hamas destroyed the gardens and vineyards. They built only concrete walls and hidden tunnels meant to bring harm, not kindness.
Since then, the people of Israel have not found the peace they offered. On October 7, 2023, a terrible attack brought much sorrow and fear. Since that day, the Jewish people have faced more pain and danger, even though their deepest wish is to live safely and peacefully in their homeland.
This book was written so children and families around the world will know the story: that the Jewish people long for peace, but their neighbors chose hatred instead of friendship. The author hopes that by remembering the past and telling the truth with gentle hearts, we can all dream of a future where peace and kindness will finally grow again-like gardens by the sea. This book reflects a true story that happened in Gaza when the Jews were forced off of their land as part of a peace deal with the Palestinians. Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent.

Does happiness come from the pursuit of pleasure or moral virtue? A vivid new translation of Cicero’s exploration of a timeless question“Of course, we all want to be happy.” So wrote the Roman statesman, orator, and philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero. He and his fellow Greek and Roman philosophers agreed that the secret to happiness—or what they called the “good life”—is pursuing the “greatest good.” The only problem is that they couldn’t agree on what the greatest good is. Cicero addressed this dilemma by composing a set of dialogues, On the Greatest Good and Evil (De finibus bonorum et malorum), in which he pitted advocates of different philosophical approaches to happiness against one another. Notably, these include the Epicureans (who believe that the greatest good is pleasure) and the Stoics (according to whom it is moral virtue). Rather than choosing sides, Cicero considers the pros and cons of the different philosophies, ultimately leaving it to his readers to make up their own minds. In How to Find Happiness, Katharina Volk offers a vivid new translation of selections from Cicero’s work, complete with an introduction and the original Latin text on facing pages. The result is a lively and engaging debate that invites each of us to discover our own path to happiness.

From the “Trail of Tears” to Wounded Knee and Little Bighorn, the narrative of American history is incomplete without the inclusion of the Native Americans that lived on the continent before European settlers arrived in the 16th and 17th centuries. Since the first contact between natives and settlers, tribes like the Sioux, Cherokee, and Navajo have both fascinated and perplexed outsiders with their history, language, and culture.
Despite being one of the most erstwhile foes the U.S. government faced during the Indian Wars, the Sioux and their most famous leaders were grudgingly admired and eventually immortalized by the very people they fought. Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse remain household names due to their leadership of the Sioux at the fateful Battle of the Little Bighorn, where the native warriors wiped out much of George Custer’s 7th Cavalry and inflicted the worst defeat of the Indian Wars upon the U.S. Army. Red Cloud remains a symbol of both defiance and conciliation, resisting the Americans during Red Cloud’s War but also transitioning into a more peaceful life for decades on reservation.
Given the various conflicts between the Americans and indigenous groups, it’s no surprise that the Shawnee continue to be closely associated with their most famous leader, Tecumseh, the most famous Native American of the early 19th century. While leading the Shawnee, he attempted to peacefully establish a Native American nation east of the Mississippi River in the wake of the American Revolution.
One of the most famous Native American tribes on the Great Plains is the Cheyenne, and their fame may be surpassed only by their influence on American history. Having split off from other groups around the 16th-17th centuries, the Cheyenne shifted from a sedentary agricultural society to the kind of nomadic group many envision when thinking of groups on the Plains.
