Synopsis

Master Flea: A Fairy-Tale in Seven Adventures of Two Friends is a humorous fairytale fantasy novel by E. T. A. Hoffmann first published in 1822. Set in the city of Frankfurt am Main, the novel follows the story of Peregrinus Tyss, who becomes entangled in the conflict between supernatural characters in bourgeois form over Dörtje Elverdink, in reality Princess Gamaheh of Famagusta.

Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann (24 January 1776 – 25 June 1822) was a German Romantic author of fantasy and Gothic horror, a jurist, composer, music critic and artist.
His stories form the basis of Jacques Offenbach's opera The Tales of Hoffmann, in which Hoffmann appears (heavily fictionalized) as the hero. He is also the author of the novella The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, on which Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's ballet The Nutcracker is based. The ballet Coppélia is based on two other stories that Hoffmann wrote, while Schumann's Kreisleriana is based on Hoffmann's character Johannes Kreisler.

In a style that one reviewer has likened to ‘Monty Python meets Terry Pratchett’, the author continues his chronicles of the history of the Dogsbreath family with the exploits of the current Ivor Dogsbreath’s great-great-great grandfather in the Old West. He rode into town on the stage as a poor, penniless immigrant. Then they told him his job was to clean up the town. He thought they meant put out the rubbish. They meant a different sort of rubbish. When he rode out again he was still a poor, penniless immigrant … but behind him ten men and one hamster lay dead and the town would never be the same. For animal lovers it was subsequently proved that the hamster had died of natural causes after a long and happy life. Contains strong language and adult humour.

Amy Chamberlain has never been one for motivational slogans or rose-tinted glasses. She’s the kind of woman who expects the worst—only to be mildly surprised when life occasionally delivers something better.
But somewhere between failed diets, disastrous first dates, and the endless chaos of everyday life, she’s discovered that optimism doesn’t always have to arrive in grand gestures. Sometimes it’s hidden in burnt toast that still tastes fine, in friendships that outlast heartbreak, or in simply making it through the day without crying in the supermarket car park.
With humour, honesty, and a touch of hard-won wisdom, Confessions of a Reluctant Optimist is a candid exploration of what it means to search for silver linings when you’re more comfortable expecting thunderstorms.
For anyone who has ever rolled their eyes at “positive vibes only” but secretly hoped for a happy ending, this is the book that says: you don’t have to be a natural optimist to find joy—you just have to keep looking.

It permeates all aspects of life, including the way we talk, what we eat, how we entertain guests, the way we practice our faith, and how we enjoy the great outdoors.
