Beschreibung

In "The Last Link: Our Present Knowledge of the Descent of Man," Ernst Haeckel presents a compelling synthesis of contemporary scientific thought, integrating findings from paleontology, anthropology, and embryology to advocate for Darwinian evolution. Haeckel's literary style is both eloquent and accessible, employing vivid illustrations to elucidate complex concepts. The book's context is rooted in the late 19th-century intellectual landscape, a time marked by fierce debates concerning evolution, morality, and human origins, which Haeckel navigates with both rigor and artistic flair. Ernst Haeckel, a prominent German biologist and philosopher, was deeply influenced by Charles Darwin's theories, which galvanized his pursuit of evolutionary biology. A contemporary of the rise of existential thought in Europe, Haeckel's work reflects not just scientific inquiry but also the cultural tensions of his time regarding religion and science. His multifaceted expertise in both zoology and art enriched his writings, allowing him to express complex ideas through a synthesis of science and philosophy. This book is essential for anyone seeking to understand the intersection of science and philosophy in the 19th century. Haeckel's rigorous yet poetic exploration of human evolution invites readers to contemplate their own place in the continuum of life, making it a vital addition to both scientific and philosophical discourse.

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that primarily affects the face, causing persistent redness, visible blood vessels, and, in some cases, pimple-like bumps. It is a common but often misunderstood disorder that can significantly impact a person’s quality of life. While the condition is not life-threatening, its unpredictable flare-ups and visible symptoms can lead to embarrassment, self-consciousness, and emotional distress.
One of the most challenging aspects of rosacea is its variable nature. Symptoms may appear suddenly and worsen over time if left untreated. Many individuals experience cycles of remission and exacerbation, where the skin improves temporarily before another flare-up occurs. Rosacea typically develops in adulthood, most commonly between the ages of 30 and 50, and affects both men and women. However, men are more likely to experience severe symptoms, particularly skin thickening on the nose, a condition known as rhinophyma.
The exact cause of rosacea remains unclear, but research suggests it results from a combination of genetic, environmental, and immune system factors. Studies indicate that an overactive immune response, abnormalities in the skin’s blood vessels, and an increased presence of microscopic skin mites (Demodex folliculorum) may all contribute to its development. Certain triggers, such as sun exposure, spicy foods, alcohol, stress, and extreme temperatures, can exacerbate symptoms, making management crucial.

The current view of science is that Earth is around 4.6 billion years old, and the first 4 billion years of its development are known as the Precambrian period. For the first billion years or so, there was no life in Earth. Then the first single-celled life-forms, early bacteria and algae, began to emerge. It’s unclear where they came from or even if they originated on this planet at all, but this gradual development continued until around four billion years ago when suddenly (in geological terms) more complex forms of life began to emerge.
Scientists call this time of an explosion of new forms of life the Paleozoic Era, and it stretched from around 541 to 250 million years ago. In the oceans and then on land, new creatures and plants began to appear in bewildering variety, and by the end of this period, life on Earth had diversified into a myriad of complex forms that filled virtually every habitat and niche available in the seas and on the planet’s only continent, Pangea.
The Precambrian Period is divided into three eons: the Hadean, the Archaean, and the Proterozoic. One layer of carbon in rocks that date to the Archaean Eon, found on islands west of Greenland, seems to have fossilized tracks that may have been left by some form of organic life, but scientists simply are not certain. The oldest confirmed remains of life date from the same eon and were found in rocks in Western Australia, which were found to contain fossilized bacteria estimated to be 3.46 billion years old. It seems likely that there were thousands, perhaps even millions of forms of life in these early periods, and most seem to have been microscopic in size and very simple in developmental terms.

The fascinating inside story of how the Android operating system came to be.

In 2004, Android was two people who wanted to build camera software but couldn't get investors interested. Today, Android is a large team at Google, delivering an operating system (including camera software) to over 3 billion devices worldwide. This is the inside story, told by the people who made it happen.

Androids: The Team that Built the Android Operating System is a first-hand chronological account of how the startup began, how the team came together, and how they all built an operating system from the kernel level to its applications, and everything in between. It describes the tenuous beginnings of this ambitious project as a tiny startup, then as a small acquisition by Google that took on an industry with strong, entrenched competition. Author Chet Haase joined the Android team at Google in May 2010 and later recorded conversations with team members to preserve the early days of Android's history leading to the launch of 1.0. This engaging and accessible book captures the developers' stories in their own voices to answer the question: How did Android succeed?
