Sinossi

In "The Trail of the Sandhill Stag," Ernest Thompson Seton offers a masterful blend of naturalistic detail and indigenous storytelling, capturing the journey of a majestic stag through the rugged Canadian wilderness. Seton'Äôs literary style is characterized by vivid imagery and poignant reflections on nature, embodying the themes of survival, instinct, and the delicate balance of ecosystems. Set against a backdrop of vibrant landscapes, the narrative weaves a rich tapestry of animal behavior, cultural mythology, and the interdependence of all living beings, reflecting the transformational era of early 20th-century America where nature writing began to flourish. Ernest Thompson Seton, a prominent naturalist and one of the founding figures of the Boy Scouts, possessed a profound admiration for wildlife that deeply influenced his writing. His experiences as a lifelong outdoorsman and his commitment to conservation are woven into every page, as he sought to bring attention to the need for environmental preservation. Seton'Äôs background in both art and literature allows him to elegantly convey complex themes through accessible and engaging prose, making his work resonate with a broad audience. This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in natural history, animal behavior, or the intersection of culture and ecology. Seton's compelling storytelling not only entertains but also prompts a deeper appreciation for wildlife and the natural world, making "The Trail of the Sandhill Stag" an essential read for lovers of nature literature.

Among the more than 34,000 species of fish, few have the walleye's following—among anglers and diners, states conferring official status on the fish, and towns battling for recognition as the Walleye Capital of the World. And among those passionate fans, few know the walleye as well as Paul J. Radomski does—a fisheries biologist, lake ecology scientist, and old fisherman. In Walleye: A Beautiful Fish of the Dark he unspools the mysteries of this fascinating fish.

Radomski looks at walleye from every angle, with something to say to the curious naturalist, committed ecologist, and avid fishing enthusiast. People who view walleye as the "lion of the lakes" might be surprised to learn that rivers are their ancestral habitat. Some might wonder about the name "wall-eye," a nod to an evolutionary adaptation to dark water environments. Others might ask: what are they, where do they exist, how do they survive, and how have people come to depend on them? Radomski discusses the principles and pitfalls of managing this predator of the twilight and shares his informed perspective on when and where stocking is prudent. He also explores three of the best walleye lakes.

From the simple pleasures of fishing for walleye to the most pressing questions about how this species survives, this book is the best word on this beautiful fish of the dark.

Health-care providers and their patients are human, and all humans have unconscious biases that affect how we listen, observe, and act. Bias impacts patients when they are at their most vulnerable. Health-care bias can mean the difference not just between suffering and relief, but between life and death.

For the first time, an author with the unique perspective of being one of America's top doctors, a woman, and Black, candidly addresses the issue of bias in health care, sharing personal and patient stories and pragmatic solutions. Dr. Angela Marshall, repeatedly named a "Top Doctor" by Washingtonian magazine, draws on extensive research, poignant stories from some of the thousands of patients she has treated, and her own compelling personal experience, to examine the bias from both patients' and health-care providers' points of view. She offers a bold blueprint for change, filled with fresh solutions that can help everyone in our health-care system.

Dismissed not only explains what so many people feel so profoundly—that the system is working against them. It also reveals what health-care practitioners, patients, and society in general can do to make it right.

On February 1, the Columbia was due to land at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 09:16. Only a few members of the press were present to watch the landing - this was, after all, supposed to be a routine return from a routine mission, the 113th for the shuttle program and the 28th for Columbia, one of the oldest Space Shuttles.
Reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere is always the most dangerous part of any space mission. The intense heat generated as a spacecraft enters the thin upper atmosphere at immense speed can be potentially lethal, but the shuttle was designed to deal with this heat, and Columbia had successfully done it 27 times in the past. For the five men and two women on board and the members of the press present, everything seemed normal, but there was a measure of concern among those in the ground control team. The team was aware that Columbia had possibly suffered damage to the thermal tiles forming the heat shield on one wing soon after liftoff, but no one knew how extensive the damage was or even if it existed at all. There was also some disagreement about how serious it might be - some on the ground were concerned this might compromise the shuttle wing’s ability to resist the heat of reentry, while others were sure it was a minor issue that would have no serious impact on the mission. Videos of the launch had been exhaustively reviewed by engineers on the ground, but it was impossible to be certain of the precise level of damage to the heat shielding on the underside and leading edge of the wing.
There was no agreement on what should or could be done, so one thing was universally agreed upon: the crew would not be informed of the problem. There was nothing they could do to make repairs and no way to avoid reentry.
