Beschreibung

In "The Apostles," Ernest Renan meticulously explores the lives and impact of the early Christian apostles, examining their historical and cultural contexts with both reverence and criticality. Renan employs a narrative style that blends biographical detail with philosophical inquiry, engaging readers in the broader implications of these figures on the development of Christianity. His deft prose invites reflection on the complexities of faith, doctrine, and the sociopolitical landscapes of the 1st century, encapsulated within an imaginative framework that seeks to reconcile history with spirituality. Ernest Renan, a French philosopher and historian, was deeply influenced by the tumultuous intellectual atmosphere of the 19th century, which was characterized by a burgeoning critique of religion and the rise of secularism. His own background as a theological student, coupled with his later disillusionment with formal religious institutions, motivated him to approach the subject of the apostles not only as historical figures but as embodiments of the evolving notion of faith. Renan's scholarly rigor and literary flair position him as a pivotal voice in the intersection of history, philosophy, and theology. For readers intrigued by the origins of Christianity and the historical underpinnings of its key figures, "The Apostles" offers a thought-provoking exploration that challenges conventional narratives and invites deeper contemplation. Renan's synthesis of history and theology is essential for anyone seeking a nuanced understanding of this transformative epoch.

Part autobiographical, part philosophical introspection, this book
reveals how the simple act of being present can transform you. It
offers a refreshing perspective about our inherited thought processes in
making life choices, challenging us to rethink our values and
priorities. It calls upon each reader to venture both inward and beyond,
inviting them to step into a more vulnerable and conscious way of being
in our defensive, ego-driven, algorithmic world.

From rigid childhood expectations to the loss of both parents, to exploring ethical
non-monogamy, to losing a mother while simultaneously becoming one, to
her steadfast commitment to flow, Vun curiously and studiously reflects
on the cyclical process of becoming more human, imploring us to
constantly reinvent ourselves into our most authentic, present versions.

Although he is often overlooked in American history today, few presidents marked a turning point for the country quite like William McKinley. As the last president to have served in the Civil War, he represented the end of an era, while at the same time his pro-business policies set in motion the Progressive Era, a period almost universally associated with Theodore Roosevelt.
Of course, the reason that period is aligned with Roosevelt is because McKinley had the unfortunate distinction of being one of only four presidents to be assassinated. In September 1901, the city of Buffalo was full of celebration. The Pan-American Exposition was ongoing, and it brought notable figures to northern New York, including President McKinley, who had been reelected less than a year earlier. But also in Buffalo was Leon Czolgosz, a young man who had turned to anarchy years earlier after losing his job, Embracing his philosophy wholeheartedly, Czolgosz believed it was his mission to take down a powerful leader he considered oppressive, and McKinley’s attendance gave him the chance.
President James Garfield had been assassinated just 20 years earlier, but McKinley didn’t worry about presidential security or his own safety, and that was the case in Buffalo. McKinley’s insistence on greeting the public and shaking hands allowed Czolgosz to walk up to him on September 6, 1901 at a public reception in the Temple of Music on the expo grounds and shoot him point blank, with one bullet grazing the president and another lodging in his abdomen. In the aftermath of the shooting, as Czolgosz was beaten and seized by the crowd, he uttered, "I done my duty." For his part, McKinley said, “He didn't know, poor fellow, what he was doing. He couldn't have known."

The story of Rome's richest man, who died a humiliating desert death in search of military glory

Marcus Licinius Crassus (115–53 BCE) was a modern man in an ancient world, a pioneer disrupter of finance and politics, and the richest man of the last years of the Roman republic. Without his catastrophic ambition, this trailblazing tycoon might have quietly entered history as Rome's first modern political financier. Instead, Crassus and his son led an army on an unprovoked campaign against Parthia into what are now the borderlands of Turkey, Syria, and Iraq, losing a battle at Carrhae which scarred Roman minds for generations.

After Crassus was killed, historians told many stories of his demise. Some said that his open mouth, shriveled by desert air, had been filled with molten gold as testament to his lifetime of greed. His story poses both immediate and lasting questions about the intertwining of money, ambition, and power.
