Beschreibung

In 'Recollections of My Youth,' Ernest Renan offers a poignant autobiographical narrative that intertwines his formative experiences with philosophical reflections. This work is characterized by its lyrical prose and intimate tone, enabling readers to explore the complexities of Renan's early life, shaped by the sociopolitical upheavals of 19th-century France. The text delves into themes of faith, doubt, and the quest for identity, while elegantly capturing the intellectual climate of an age that oscillated between enlightenment and romanticism, revealing how these influences informed his later scholarship on religion and history. Ernest Renan, a pivotal figure in the intellectual landscape of his time, was deeply influenced by his upbringing in a devout Catholic family, which instilled in him both a rigorous sense of questioning and a passionate engagement with spirituality. His diverse career as a historian, philologist, and philosopher allowed him to confront the cultural tensions of his era, ultimately leading to the creation of a work that not only reflects his personal journey but also underscores the broader philosophical debates surrounding faith and rationalism. Recommended for readers interested in the intersections of personal narrative and historical inquiry, 'Recollections of My Youth' stands as a profound exploration of self-identity amidst tumultuous times, providing valuable insights into the mind of one of France's most influential intellectuals.

A WWII Soviet officer recalls leading a battalion of convict-soldiers in this rare firsthand account of a Red Army penal unit. Alexander Pyl’cyn was eighteen years old when he was drafted into the Red Army in 1941. He went on to serve with great distinction, earing the Order of the Red Banner, the Order of the Great Patriotic War, and the Order of the Red Star for his actions during the war. As the commander of a penal battalion on the Eastern Front, he led an unruly band of convict-soldiers, Gulag prisoners, and former Soviet POWs deemed untrustworthy.   Relegated to the most difficult and dangerous assignments, Pyl’cyn’s unit was called up to break through the enemy’s defenses. He led his penal unit through the Soviets’ massive offensive in the summer of 1944, the Vistula-Oder operation into eastern Germany, and the bitter assault on Berlin in 1945. Though his men suffered massive casualties, and he himself withstood multiple wounds, he survived the war to tell this incredible story.

The Second World War ends and Josje is returned to his parents. Who are these people who call themselves my parents, he imagines. He is three years old and feels abandoned, confused and angry. He wants to return to his “real” parents who loved and sheltered him during the war. “My name is Pietje Dijkstra not Josje Gosler!”, he states tearfully when goaded by his cousin. As a Jew and a Hidden Child, his innocence protected him as much as his Christian family.
At seven months of age, for his own safety as well as his parents’, he was given to a young nursing student from the Dutch resistance, and placed with the Dijkstra family in Wageningen. The impact of his first separation from his parents, may not be so easily ascertained, but when he is returned to them, his porcelain psyche is damaged and his closest companions are fear and distrust. Childhood wounds never fully heal and the impact of his early life is seen through the lens of an immigrant, as he migrates with his family to Israel and subsequently to the United States.
This is a personal memoir of a child survivor that spans from WWII to the late 20th century. A story of a young boy, who becomes a man, ever wandering and struggling to find himself. His parents, emotionally gutted from their own wartime experiences, are barely able to care for themselves, let alone this young stranger.

My Secret Life is an anonymously penned memoir written during a period from the 1840s to the 1880s by a wealthy and sex obsessed English gentleman who refers to himself simply as ‘Walter’. Part confessional, part investigative erotic journalism, it meticulously documents every detail of the author’s prolific sexual encounters, offering us in the process an eye and thigh opening account of life behind closed doors in the Victorian age.

Women, in both mind and body, were the all consuming object of Walter’s interest. From early youth through to old age his quest for erotic discovery and adventure with them was never diminished.

Unlike contemporary 19th century erotic texts, such as The Pearl, whose sole object was to titillate, Walter’s interest in his subjects did not end with the extinguishing of the carnal flame. His hunger to understand the circumstances and minds of the women he encountered is never upstaged by the sex. Their potted life histories, their most intimate desires and acts were shared with him and in turn meticulously recorded by him, written down verbatim while still fresh in his mind.

The resulting poignant record of a lost era and the intimate moments of the women who inhabited it offer us a remarkable insight into the 19th century that cannot be gleaned from any other source.

The complete unabridged text is being released as a fully scored audiofilm (an audio book with accompanying music soundtrack) by film composer Dominic Crawford Collins.

By age 25, Tracie Bork is a rising scientist and half of a power couple who throws lavish faculty parties. But beneath the perfect surface lurks the chaos she’s tried to control since childhood—and alarming physical symptoms she’d rather dismiss. Each year, she works more fiendishly than the one before as the complications to her health compound and become more mysterious until finally, she hits a wall, body, mind, and soul. In a series of honest inquiries and reflections, Bork chronicles her journey as a patient, academic, former military brat, and woman in search of faith. She explores the inexplicable connection between early trauma and a damaged nervous system—which incites a cascade of drug and food reactions that bring her to the brink of death—and the cost of using control to feel safe in the world that’s let her down. One part coming-of-age story and another part medical thriller, the stories in Becoming unfold everywhere from Kodiak, Alaska, to Kyoto, Japan, and ultimately reveal the healing that’s possible if we can quiet our analytical mind and open up to divine assistance. This memoir will baffle, educate, and validate anyone struggling with a mysterious illness or chronic high stress, inspiring them to face their fears, let go of the coping strategies that hold them back, and live spiritually awakened.
