Beschreibung

Punctuated by rhyme and shaped by traditional forms, the poems in Small Pointed Things turn encounters with the natural world and scenes from family life into acts of self-discovery. Poignant and funny in equal measure, many of these poems address human concerns by comically reimagining them through the analogous 'lives' of plants and animals – from snowdrops to love-lies-bleeding, manatees to warthogs, scorpions and moths to bats and swallows. Animals and insects provide opportunities for reflection: the difference between bats and swallows unpacks the complexity of spousal relations, two down-and-out warthogs arouse sudden, if unwarranted shame, and a pair of singing blackbirds tenderly expose the secret to marital compatibility and compromise. There are also poems about poetry and ideas, lasting love and grief. Formally deft and classically inspired, with hints of Wordsworth, Frost and Marianne Moore, the poems in Small Pointed Things seek to uncover various forms of knowledge while taking aim, ultimately, at knowingness itself.
'One glimpse of his carapace

will shock us –

brandishing pincers like maracas –

and his sting, the coup de grâce!'

In this follow up to her best-selling debut collection of poetry ("Enough Rope" from 1926) Dorothy Parker published "Sunset Gun" (1928) her second of three volumes of short verse. One of the 20th century's most celebrated and renowned humorists, Parker once again delivers a biting, satiric and insightful look at love, life and literature in this brilliant collection. Dorothy Parker - social commentator, political reformer and legendary wit - has enjoyed a special place in American culture and "Sunset Gun" is another early example of Parker's unique and wry commentary on modern life. It is presented here in its original and unabridged format.

The Native-Born is Rudyard Kipling in full, booming voice—an ode to homeland, heritage, and the fierce pride of those raised under blazing southern skies.
Through vivid imagery and pulsing rhythm, Kipling toasts the people of the far-flung British colonies: the “Sons of the Golden South,” the settlers and workers who carved their lives into vast prairies, tin-roofed towns, and coastlines battered by sun and sea.
With its rolling cadence and sweeping scope, the poem celebrates the land that shapes a person—the cradle that defines their loyalty, their labor, and their identity. From verandas glowing in moonlight to dusty plains alive with color and heat, The Native-Born blends nostalgia, rugged beauty, and unshakable pride.
Narrated with rich clarity by Phil Thames, this performance brings Kipling’s celebratory toast to life, honoring the people, places, and spirit that shaped a generation.
A stirring tribute. A timeless anthem. A salute to the land that calls you home.

Come join me in the hilarious romp that is The Tinker's Wedding by J.M. Synge, a story of two young tinkers trying to con a travelling holy man into marrying them, all while their mother is constantly trying to satiate her indomitable thirst for drink, thereby inadvertently causing more problems than the drink is worth. Blaming, miscommunication, and utter tomfoolery ensues, leading to the final culmination of each party getting ready to pounce on each other's necks and outrageously strangle each other Saturday-morning-cartoon style. Come witness both sincerity and hilarity being wrapped up in this tight but brilliantly crafted two act drama-comedy.

'The sky belongs to everybody and everybody belongs to the sky.
When the genie comes out, wish for late busesand missed trains, and beers on benches, because when someone is gone, they are gone.'
Kareem Parkins-Brown's highly-anticipated pamphlet is an audacious and richly plural celebration of friends and selves, present and otherwise. In Parkins-Brown's hands, language bends like an illusionist's spoon – a dazzling, fisheye-lens distortion of daily grief, absurdity and communion – while reminding us always that the trick is to carry on living.
'Kareem Parkins-Brown's excellent pamphlet is like a funeral held in a bouncy castle: the line-breaks slip on their own tears, jumping mourners get bruised by their collisions and the laughing starts to sound a lot like crying.' Caroline Bird
'I have been waiting for this book for years. There's no voice like Kareem Parkin-Brown's. Sacred and profane, these are critical, kinetic poems for, and of, right now.' Rachel Long
'Kareem Parkins-Brown is one of the most beloved wordsmiths on the London poetry circuit. 'Oi You Lot' will show its readers why.' Raymond Antrobus

This mirror's selfie-proof, a machine that dams back the gloom.
After a brief period of mourning, it was the afternoon.
This mirror is selfie-proof, a machine that dams
back the gloom. When machines dream they dream
of stopping. But this bulimic is all hangnails
      with a hankering to throatsing.

Following the Fratellini Family of clowns, Jeramy Dodds astonishes readers
and non-readers alike. Techniques such as his patented triumph, the Grand
Mal Caesura, along with other favourites, are on display inside. Dodds is a warlock of words, only to be outdone by them, enslaved by them, freed by them - maybe even loved by them. A haunting, yet hilarious depiction of a journey to and fro the furthest limits of the human experiment.
