Summary

In the heart of London, amidst the labyrinthine alleyways and fog-laden streets, a tale of love, desperation, and the allure of wealth unfolds.

I, a man adrift in the city's teeming currents, find solace only in the companionship of my faithful feline companion, Luna. My monotonous life of menial labor and meager sustenance is confined to a cramped flat, haunted by the ever-looming threat of eviction. The city's cacophony-the creaking floorboards, distant sirens, and relentless footsteps-has become a cruel symphony, mocking my precarious existence.

Desperation gnaws at me as job applications pile up unanswered, and my gaze falls upon Luna, her emerald eyes reflecting both my failures and my resolve. Amidst the fog-choked streets, a flicker of hope appears in the form of Chelsea, a mysterious woman with eyes as piercing as Luna's. She offers an audacious proposition: to steal a priceless black diamond, the Midnight, from the wealthy and ruthless Ashworth family.

Driven by a longing for a better life, we embark on this perilous heist. But as fate would have it, Chelsea's tragic accident shatters our plans, leaving me alone with the diamond and a world of regret. Haunted by her loss and pursued by Ashworth's relentless wrath, I must navigate a treacherous web of deception to survive.

Adopting a new identity, I confront Ashworth, negotiating my safety with the very jewel that now symbolizes both my deepest love and my darkest guilt. As I prepare to vanish into the city's shadows, the question remains: Can I escape the clutches of my past and find redemption, or will the fog-laden streets of London consume me entirely?

In " Midnight" the city's indifferent heartbeat echoes the struggles of a man fighting against the currents of fate, love, and desperation, with each step teetering on the edge of salvation and oblivion.

The narrator of Hogg is a Huck Finn–like youngster caught in society’s most sinister seams—but unlike Huck, he passes no moral judgments on the violence he takes part in . . .Hogg is the story of a man—a depraved trucker named Franklin Hargus, whom the people he works for call Hogg—and of the nameless boy who tells the story of three days of unspeakable sexual violence and devastation, which, together, they initiate in a small seaside American city in the middle of the last century. Hogg is a towering brute who makes his living as a rapist for hire. By the end of a series of vicious attacks, kidnappings, and mass murders, the reader will wonder who is more corrupt: the man or the boy.   Samuel R. Delany completed his first draft of Hogg within a day, if not within hours, of the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City and revised it over the next four years, though it was not released until 1995.
