Beschreibung

In the heart of ancient Crete, amidst the ruins of millennia-old palaces and the enigmatic labyrinths that continue to capture our imagination, lies a mystery that has baffled historians, linguists and archaeologists for over a century: Linear A. This cryptic writing system, used by the Minoan civilisation between 1800 and 1450 BC, has long defied our understanding, presenting itself as an impenetrable code that holds the secrets of one of the most advanced cultures of the ancient world. In The Incredible Mystery of Linear A, the author takes us on a fascinating journey to uncover unexpected truths. Exploring intriguing hypotheses about the meaning of the Minoan script, deciphering its structure, patterns, and connections to other ancient languages, the book takes us along a path that interweaves historical reconstructions, philological insights, and the efforts (and missteps) of scholars whose search for the truth has reshaped our understanding of the Minoan civilisation and its role in the ancient world. The Incredible Mystery of Linear A is a must-read for anyone drawn to intellectual challenge and the allure of ancient mysteries. Written in a clear and accessible style for those without a specialist background, the book encourages readers to look 'inside' the words and immerse themselves in a world of hidden knowledge. It is the perfect choice for anyone fascinated by the mystery of ancient scripts and eager to uncover the secrets of a hitherto unknown people.Enrica Patria Pugliese is a retired professor of Classics in high schools. As a friend and student of John Chadwick, famous for his collaboration with Michael Ventris in deciphering Linear B, she corresponded with him from 1985 until his death. With his encouragement and support, she devoted herself to the study of Linear A. This book is therefore dedicated to Chadwick and contains numerous excerpts from their letters. She currently lives in Milan.

America’s model of representational government rests on the premise that elected officials respond to the opinions of citizens. This is a myth, however, not a reality, according to James N. Druckman and Lawrence R. Jacobs. In Who Governs?, Druckman and Jacobs combine existing research with novel data from US presidential archives to show that presidents make policy by largely ignoring the views of most citizens in favor of affluent and well-connected political insiders. Presidents treat the public as pliable, priming it to focus on personality traits and often ignoring it on policies that fail to become salient. Melding big debates about democratic theory with existing research on American politics and innovative use of the archives of three modern presidents—Johnson, Nixon, and Reagan—Druckman and Jacobs deploy lively and insightful analysis to show that the conventional model of representative democracy bears little resemblance to the actual practice of American politics. The authors conclude by arguing that polyarchy and the promotion of accelerated citizen mobilization and elite competition can improve democratic responsiveness. An incisive study of American politics and the flaws of representative government, this book will be warmly welcomed by readers interested in US politics, public opinion, democratic theory, and the fecklessness of American leadership and decision-making.

    Naïve Readings - Reveilles...

One sure fact of humanity is that we all cherish our opinions and will often strongly resist efforts by others to change them. Philosophers and politicians have long understood this, and whenever they have sought to get us to think differently they have often resorted to forms of camouflage that slip their unsettling thoughts into our psyche without raising alarm. In this fascinating examination of a range of writers and thinkers, Ralph Lerner offers a new method of reading that detects this camouflage and offers a way toward deeper understandings of some of history’s most important—and most concealed—messages.             Lerner analyzes an astonishing diversity of writers, including Francis Bacon, Benjamin Franklin, Edward Gibbon, Judah Halevi, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Moses Maimonides, and Alexis de Tocqueville. He shows that by reading their words slowly and naïvely, with wide-open eyes and special attention for moments of writing that become self-conscious, impassioned, or idiosyncratic, we can begin to see a pattern that illuminates a thinker’s intent, new messages purposively executed through indirect means. Through these experimental readings, Lerner shows, we can see a deep commonality across writers from disparate times and situations, one that finds them artfully challenging others to reject passivity and fatalism and start thinking afresh.

Recently, it has become increasingly evident that extreme concentrations of wealth and power have profound impacts on our politics, but extreme inequality's influence on our daily lives—and our futures—has been vastly overlooked. In Burned by Billionaires, author and a senior scholar at the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, DC, Chuck Collins chronicles how the actions of the top .01% have severe consequences for the rest of us. Collins takes down the "myth of meritocracy," unraveling how the rich rig the game in their favor, resulting in a concentration of wealth in the hands of a tiny (but growing) class of billionaires—leading to intense income and political polarization. Collins charts this economic, social, and ecological destruction and shows how these effects manifest in every facet of our society.

Collins argues that perhaps, worst of all, the concentration of wealth and power is leading to political hijacking, undermining the democratic principle that our votes matter equally. This book is an urgent call-to-action and road map to a more equitable society, where everyone has access to the resources that will allow them to thrive. Burned by Billionaires offers a pointed prescription for taking power back from the billionaire class and achieving the shared prosperity that comes from a healthy and equal society.

Teachers, this book is a guide for taking care of education's most valuable resource: you. Author Jay Schroder, founder of the popular Teach from Your Best Self Institute, demonstrates why the version of ourselves that we bring to teaching matters and describes how we can rejuvenate ourselves while maximizing student learning. Part I explains why the self that a teacher brings to the classroom is important. Part II explores skills that will help us sustain a best-self state in all manner of situations. Part III delves into those moments when we're provoked beyond our limits and our "hurtspots" come sharply into view. It offers ways to avert a reactive state or recover from it. Lastly, Part IV provides simple approaches for building a more durable, best self for the long term—a best self with deepened capacity to respond rather than react in the pressurized conditions of teaching. With fresh ideas presented throughout, you'll learn how to prioritize your own well-being so you can continue to make a difference for your students.

The new United States was faced with a fundamental problem: to expand, it had to settle lands to the west of the Appalachian Mountains, ceded to it by the British. However, the mountains were occupied by Native American groups who had no desire to make way for white settlers. The treaty had created a vast frontier for the fledgling nation, and any American settlers pushing west along it were bound to encounter hostile natives.
For the most part, the conflicts that followed consisted mostly of the Native Americans suffering defeat in the face of a better-equipped adversary, interspersed with binding treaties, which, on the side of the federal government, proved not very binding at all. Occasionally, however, there arose a Native American leader of such ability that such defeats were temporarily reversed, and Little Turtle, the war chief of the Miami tribe, was one such man. Under his leadership, a confederation of Miami and other tribes inflicted the worst defeat ever suffered by an American army in the newly independent nation. Almost a quarter of the Army’s total strength was lost in a single battle, but while later Native American leaders such as Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse have become legends, Little Turtle is not as well-remembered. This is particularly odd, given that he actually defeated the American military and helped shape the development of the nascent United States and its military.
From the American Revolution up through the Battle of Tippecanoe, Native Americans in the Old Northwest (today’s Midwestern states) had been putting up stout resistance to that region’s settlement by white land speculators and settlers. Things came to a head when Tecumseh and his brother, the Prophet Tenskwatawa, spearheaded a movement in the region that greatly influenced the area’s Native Americans.
