Synopsis

It's Amy's first day of school and she is a little nervous. So Amy's mother gives her a big hug and shows her a folded piece of paper. Then she quickly puts the paper in Amy's pocket and tells her to open it if she needs a little help. Follow Amy throughout her day as she meets new friends, eats lunch, and plays on the playground. What will happen when Amy falls, scrapes both of her knees, and has to go see the school nurse? Will she look at the folded piece of paper in her pocket? A positive ending will add interest and help calm young students' nerves about attending the first day of school.

The "Baseball Buddies" series offers young readers heartwarming stories filled with friendship, sportsmanship, and life lessons, all centered around America’s favorite past-time. Meet the Baseball Buddies, a diverse group of young boys and girls who come together to form a baseball team. Each team member has their unique strengths and personalities. With the help of their enthusiastic coach, Coach Joe, they embark on an exciting journey to learn the basics of baseball and how to approach life's challenges with courage, determination, and teamwork. In Book 1: Building a Team Luis joins his new baseball team, the Manatees, where things seem hopeless at first. Some of his new teammates— including “loud and obnoxious” home-run slugger Jimmie—are mean to him or to each other. His new coach doesn’t tell the players everything to do like his old coach did. And some of the Manatees seem more interested in goofing off than in working hard. Then Coach Joe makes Luis team captain. Will Luis rise to the challenge? Can he get the Manatees to balance working hard and having fun? Will he help his teammates learn to be friends rather than compete? Baseball Buddies explores the power of working together, what it takes to build a team, and the lasting friendships that form on the baseball field.

With the help of magical Oddities, like a Pistol that never misses, Clover and her friends face a new danger, the ravenous Underking, in this riveting sequel to Oddity.

Despite Clover’s victory over the destructive Seamstress, war continues to rage between the fledgling Unified States and Napoléon Bonaparte. Clover and Nessa, former snake-oil salesgirl, join the Women’s Service League expecting to dole out soup and socks to invalids and orphans. Instead, under the direction of the wealthy and mysterious Miss Yamada, they’re tasked with rooting out the last of the pestilential Vermin—vicious creatures animated by magic, such as squirrel skins stuffed with nails, who have been terrorizing the countryside. But when the group is attacked by a new kind of monster—a sharp-toothed harehound with bloodshot eyes—they discover a much greater threat lurks: the grotesque Underking and his army of twisted creatures. With the help of a Paper-Doll Witch, an elegantly dressed skeleton, a girl bearing a Quilt with threatening properties, and Susanna the bad-tempered Doll, Clover and Nessa must defeat the Underking before he conquers the whole land. This follow-up to Oddity is a wildly imaginative and engrossing dark fantasy set in an alternate American past.

"Brown’s imagination and voice-y character work are in fine form in this feisty sequel to Oddity (2021), and his latest villain is one for the history books. An ideal series for those not quite ready for the Miss Peregrine books."—Booklist
