Synopsis

"Classical Myth Symbolism" explores how ancient Greek and Roman myths encode fundamental truths about humanity and society. It examines these narratives for symbolic patterns reflecting social order, the natural world, and psychological archetypes, offering a fact-based analysis rooted in historical context. The book argues that myths, when viewed as symbolic systems, provide valuable insights into the foundations of human societies and psychology. For example, myths often legitimized social hierarchies through tales of gods and heroes, revealing embedded power dynamics.

The book progresses by first defining key terms and outlining the methodological framework, then dedicating subsequent sections to the core themes. One section focuses on how myths legitimize social hierarchies, another on the personification of nature, and the third on psychological archetypes. This approach distinguishes "Classical Myth Symbolism" by avoiding speculative interpretations and focusing on objective symbolic patterns.

By understanding these patterns, readers can gain a deeper appreciation of art, literature, and culture, as well as insights into personal growth.

“[A] groundbreaking study combining psychoanalytical and anthropological methods to analyse the impact of industrialization on ‘peasants.’” —Booknews The renowned psychoanalyst Erich Fromm analyzed more than just general society and societal processes. Together with Michael Maccoby, he completed a study of Mexican villagers to empirically illustrate how historical, economic, and social requirements determine behavior.Social Character in a Mexican Village does much more than introduce a new approach to the analysis of social phenomena. It throws new light on one of the world’s most pressing problems, the impact of the industrialized world on the traditional character of the laboring class. Unanimously, the book is an outstanding introduction to Fromm’s concept of social character. “Fromm and Maccoby have written a study of crucial importance.” —Richard J. Barnet, Institute for Policy Studies

Dalai Lama (2000) believes that seeking happiness "lies in our nature": The desire or need to be happy knows no bounds. It is something that lies in our nature. As such, it needs no grounds and it is justified by the simple fact that it is something we rightly want out of our nature. One has also asked if happiness is as important in all cultures. The answer is that happiness is at the top of the wish-list in every country; It is more important than wealth and to come to heaven, and as important as love (Diener and Biswas-Diener, 2008)...what makes us richer has been costly. The wealth, or what has been the prerequisite for wealth, has reduced a quieter life, close and stable relationships, we are moving apart. A materialistic lifestyle has a negative connection with happiness (Hellevik, 2003). NEF (2016) has calculated values on Happy Planet Index for 140 countries. Highest ranks Costa Rica and a number of other countries in Latin America. The population of Costa Rica has high values for happiness and longevity, and they have low values of ecological footprints. Norway has very high values of happiness and longevity, but also of footprints. In total, Norway is ranked twelfth and therefore highest among European countries, but closely followed by Albania. The United Kingdom is at thirty-fourth place, Canada number eighty-five and the United States number 108.

Gender equity can't happen without racial equity. We need Shared Sisterhood.

Bias persists in organizations and society. Despite efforts that have been made in the last few decades, gender and racioethnic equity still hasn't been achieved. What's worse, Black, Indigenous, Asian, and Latina women are being held back more than their White counterparts.

Professor Tina Opie first started Shared Sisterhood as a movement to drive gender and racial equity in organizations. Since then, she and professor Beth A. Livingston have worked together to spread the word to leaders across organizations, with thousands of followers joining the cause. In this book, they explain how to use vulnerability, trust, empathy, and risk-taking to build Shared Sisterhood and break down three key parts of the process:

    1. Dig into your own assumptions around racioethnicity, gender, and power

    2. Bridge the divide between women of all backgrounds through authentic relationships

    3. Advance all women across the organization and beyond

Balancing a mix of history, research, and real-life examples—including the authors' own experiences—this book encourages everyone to join Shared Sisterhood and advance equity for all.

Indyref: the Scottish Referendum of 2014 in which 84.6% of the Scottish public voted, making it one of the largest voter turnouts in British political history.

This book is an inside account of the independence referendum campaign. It captures the highs and lows and twists and turns from a perspective close to the decision-making frontline, but far enough removed to offer a dispassionate and personal perspective of the unfolding events. Wishart takes the reader back to the energy, excitement and drama of the biggest political decision the Scottish people have ever been asked to participate in – a truly immersive experience, with people previously uninterested in political campaigning engaged in trying to win for their respective camp.

The referendum changed everything in Scottish political life and its influence is felt in every one of our political institutions, and remains indelibly embedded in our political culture.

There is a very real sense that the many promises made around more powers for Scotland, made during the independence referendum
by the uk Government, have not been realised.

The independence referendum itself may be long concluded, but its impacts, effects and legacy remain very much live. There can be no doubt that many of the constitutional debates that continue to take place today have their origins in the absorbing and beguiling campaign for independence.
