Sinopsis

"Eternal Flames" explores the pervasive symbolism of perpetual fire across cultures, revealing its profound connection to immortality, the divine, and the human spirit. From ancient civilizations to modern times, eternal flames have represented continuity, hope, and a link between the mortal and the eternal. The book highlights how maintaining these flames was often a sacred duty, entrusted to vestal virgins or priestly orders, symbolizing a society's core values and ancestral connections.

Examining traditions from Rome, Greece, Persia, Judaism, Zoroastrianism, and indigenous cultures, the book reveals the diverse ways societies have conceptualized and utilized eternal flames. The book uniquely synthesizes insights from religious studies, history, and anthropology to provide a nuanced understanding of this universal symbol.

It argues that the persistent motif of undying flames reflects a deep human longing for permanence and a connection to something beyond the physical realm. Structured thematically, "Eternal Flames" begins with an introduction to the concept, examines specific rituals and practices, presents case studies of particular cultures, and concludes by exploring modern interpretations of this ancient symbol, offering an analytical framework for interpreting the cultural significance of perpetual fire across different societies.

    Revolution and Terror

This book is a study of the relationship between revolution and terror. Historically many have claimed that revolution inevitably devolves into terror, best reflected in the way in which after coming to power the revolutionary elite turns on itself, and one section of it uses terrorist means to eliminate another section. Graeme Gill argues that in order to understand the relationship between revolution and terror, it is necessary to distinguish between different types of terror. There are three such types: revolutionary terror, in which the aim is to destroy enemies and thereby consolidate the regime; transformational terror, designed to drive the politico-socio-economic transformation of society that is the purpose of the 'great' revolutions; and inverted terror, which is when terror is turned against part of the elite and regime more broadly. The analysis explains how these different types of terror are related to the revolutionary seizure of power, showing that revolutionary and transformational terror are organically connected to revolution while for inverted terror the connection is mediated through the leader. The argument is prosecuted through detailed analysis of the French, Russian, and Chinese revolutions. The study ends by assessing the contemporary salience of the lessons of the great revolutions in the light of the low level of violence in the negotiated revolutions of 1989.

Shortlisted for Best Non-Fiction or Fiction by a Parliamentarian at the Westminster Book Awards 2025From the revolutionary use of drones to staged coups, child abduction and psychological warfare, the war in Ukraine is like no other. It is a new form of total war, combining traditional military force with all the non-military tools of the Russian state. The 2022 invasion was just the next stage of a conflict that Russia has been fighting since 2005, using all the tactics at its disposal to control Ukraine's politics and wreak havoc.Combining over a decade of research, astute analysis and powerful stories from the front line, and including striking photographs of the people and scenes he encountered along the way, Bob Seely has written the authoritative guide to this new form of conflict. Travelling extensively throughout Ukraine, Seely meets figures such as Panoushka, the sniper who continues to fight despite the loss of her fiancé, and Ksenia, the seventeen-year-old who journeyed through Russia searching for her abducted younger brother. Above all, Seely argues that understanding Moscow's new total war is critical because Russia considers itself at war with the West as well as Ukraine, directing some of the tactics used there against us.Insightful, gripping and at times moving, this book is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the unconventional methods Russia and other authoritarian states will use to challenge the West for global supremacy and undermine our beliefs, power and influence.

Gillian Darley takes us on a vivid, personal tour, from the seaside piers to the empty marshes and the New Town tower blocks, revealing a landscape and a story like no other.

Alongside Essex Man and TOWIE, there's the Essex that nurtured the first Puritan settlers in America, that welcomed refugees from Europe, fugitives from the underworld and bombed-out EastEnders. Where dreamers and makers, punk poets, anarchist sects and inventors all found inspiration.

A Colchester nurseryman was the first to trade with a secretive Eastern Kingdom. Braintree's only earthquake inspired an innovative building system. In Epping, a spat over firewood led to an historic victory for the common people. In Essex, the clash between city and countryside, capital and province, created a shower of sparks that ultimately set the world on fire.

Drawing on everything from early maps to reality TV, Excellent Essex is no guide book, but a wonderful guide to England's most misunderstood county.
