  When we think of Venice, we think of masks, canals, murals and frescoes, and little “gondoliers” with picturesque boats. Venice, indeed, has an impressive artistic history. But did you know that Venice was also, for a while, a considerably-sized empire? 
  Although no enduring historic records associate with the creation of Venice, the Republic of Venice's history is typically said to start at 12 a.m. on Friday, March 25th, AD 421, when authorities from Padua established the city to develop a trading center in that area of northern Italy. 
  The creation of the Venetian republic is said to have accompanied the starting of the church of St. James at the exact same time. Still, the church (which is believed to be that of Saint Giacomo di Rialto) dates no earlier than the l lth century, and no after the mid-twelfth century. 
  According to legend, the area's first residents were Hun and Germanic refugees escaping succeeding waves of Hun and Germanic intrusions from the mid-second to mid-fifth centuries, who originated from near Roman cities like Padua, Aquileia, Treviso, Altino, and Concordia (contemporary Concordia Sagittaria), and the undefended countryside.

  The role of women in Ancient Egyptian society was multifaceted, reflecting the complex and dynamic culture of this ancient civilization. Women in Egypt held a relatively high status compared to their counterparts in many other ancient cultures. They were considered equal to men in certain aspects, such as the ability to own property, initiate divorce, and partake in religious rituals. Women were also key figures in the household, and their roles in family and social structures were crucial for the stability and prosperity of Egyptian society. 
  One of the most notable aspects of the role of women in Ancient Egypt was their legal rights. Egyptian women had the legal ability to own land, businesses, and wealth, which provided them with a level of autonomy not commonly found in other ancient societies. This was particularly significant in a culture where family wealth and land were vital to survival and success. In cases of divorce or widowhood, women could retain ownership of their property, and were often entitled to a share of the family’s wealth. Women could also inherit property from their parents, and daughters were not excluded from inheritance as they often were in other cultures. 
  In the social realm, women had significant responsibilities within the family unit. They were primarily responsible for managing household duties, including the care of children, food preparation, and the overall maintenance of the home. These tasks, while often perceived as domestic, were essential to the functioning of society. Women also played important roles as mothers and caregivers, which was highly valued in Egyptian culture. The ideal woman in Egypt was often depicted as a loving and devoted mother, and this image was reflected in religious texts, art, and literature.

  Caesar is still remembered for winning a civil war and helping bring about the end of the Roman Republic, leaving a line of emperors in its place, but it’s quite possible that none of what Caesar did would’ve happened without the template for such actions being set 40 years earlier. At the time, when Caesar was in his teens, war was being waged both on the Italian peninsula and abroad, with domestic politics pitting the conservative, aristocratic optimates against the populist, reformist populares, and this tension ultimately escalated into an all-out war. One of the leading populares was Caesar’s uncle, Gaius Marius, a military visionary who had restructured the legions and extended the privileges of land ownership and citizenship to legionaries on condition of successful completion of a fixed term of service. In the late 2nd century B.C., Marius had waged a successful campaign against several Germanic tribes, and after earning eternal fame in the Eternal City, Marius was appointed a consul several times. In 88 B.C., he entered into conflict with his erstwhile protégé, the optimate Sulla, over command of the army to be dispatched against Mithridates VI of Pontus, a long-time enemy of Rome and its Greek allies.   
  	The 50 years following the assassination of Severus Alexander on March 19, 235 A.D. has been generally regarded by academics as one of the lowest points in the history of the Roman Empire. This stands in stark contrast to the previous 150 years, which included the reigns of the Five Good Emperors and has been universally praised as one of the high points of the empire. Severus Alexander was the last of the Severan emperors, and the subsequent years of crisis were characterized by a series of short reigns, usually ending in the violent death of the reigning emperor.
