Beschreibung

This e-book is part of the Ulysses' Shelter project started in 2017 with the objective to build a network of exchange literary residencies aimed at young writers and literary translators. The second stage of Ulysses' Shelter is once again being co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union, and coordinated by Croatian publishing house and literary agency Sandorf, with four partners, Literature Across Frontiers and Wales Literature Exchange in Wales, Krokodil in Serbia, Thraka in Greece and Slovene Writers' Association in Slovenia.

This e-book represents a cross-section of external and internal events from each young literary creator in the months between August 2020 and the end of 2020. It consists of five chapters, each offering a unique insight into the artists' lives, thinking and fears in the last quarter of 2020, that is, in the year Covid-19 was born.

At the end of the book, there is a short reflection by the young literary creators on the guest performances carried out in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Then there is a short presentation of all the literary correspondents.

Do you remember the stories of those taken prisoner during WWII? Can you name any heroes from the war? How many of those names are of women?
So often, we remember war heroes as men completing great feats of strength on the battlefield, saving the lives of their fellow soldiers. There have been multiple books, films, and articles written about soldiers during WWII. Some are fictional, while some are based on true stories. From Saving Private Ryan to The Great Escape, the public is not at any loss for the stories of the trials that men faced during the Second World War.
The stories that are all too often forgotten are those of the women. These are true stories of female prisoners of war, courageous nurses taken prisoner while serving in the military to take care of those soldiers. They are the women who risked life and limb to do what they could to stop the spread of fascism.
Within the pages of this book lie the stories of five incredible women prisoners of war during World War Two. These women not only risked their lives in the line of duty, just as their male counterparts did, but they also faced horrific atrocities and risks directly tied to their gender.
    These women are:
    • A flight nurse whose plane was shot down over enemy lines only to completely confuse the German Army as to what to do with her.
    • An American woman living in Germany who worked to infiltrate the Nazis to dismantle the system from the inside.
    • The sole survivor of a mass murder of nurses only to have her own government silence her from telling her story.
    • A feminist and political activist working to stop fascism and educate her fellow women, even while inside a concentration camp.
    • A nurse who simply wanted to return to her post regardless of the torture she endured.
It is our duty to remember these women who survived war and honor them as the true heroines they were.

A figure as fascinating as any of his celebrated subjects, Don Bachardy has lived an extraordinary life at the heart of Hollywood, literary, and artistic circles. His drawings and paintings reside in museums throughout Europe and the United States, and include portraits of movie stars, writers, artists, and public and private figures of every background—from Bette Davis and Joan Crawford to Tennessee Williams and Truman Capote—all rendered in a candid, expressive style.

In this unique oral biography, Bachardy recounts his astonishing story, providing illuminating recollections of celebrity portrait sittings and revelations about his thirty-year relationship with Christopher Isherwood. From their meeting in the 1950s until Isherwood's death in 1986, theirs was a legendary love story, courageous and uncompromising for its time, and remarkable in any era for the creative collaborations and art it continues to inspire.

Drawn from one-on-one interviews and conversations conducted at the Santa Monica home Bachardy shared with Isherwood, Michael Schreiber has crafted a biography unlike any other, filled with tantalizing celebrity tales set against the backdrop of Bachardy's artistic and personal journey. Wise, warm, and unflinching, this is a fresh and revealing portrait of a life lived with boundless bravery, curiosity, and love.

Experience a novel unlike any other. Graham Leo's Our Common Life weaves together the genres of biography, memoir, and novel, delving into the complexities of family, identity, and reconciliation of memories.
Set against the cultural backdrop of 1920s to 1970s Queensland, this biographical novel is a poignant exploration of one man's tumultuous life and its profound impact on those around him – but especially on his youngest son.
Graham Leo masterfully intertwines the lives of father and son, navigating themes of religion, war, family turmoil, in the timeless quest for finding out the writer's own personal identity. Our Common Life spans three generations, offering readers a glimpse into the struggles and triumphs of a family shaped by love, conflict, loss, and resilience.
Leo's prose captivates with a literary flair reminiscent of classical novels, drawing on a wide range of literary references from the ancient classics to modern writers. Through vivid storytelling and intimate reflection, he invites readers to embark on a journey of their own self-discovery, both through laughter and tears.
This is not just a story—it's an invitation to explore the complexities of human relationships, to confront the ghosts of the past, and eventually to find peace in the bonds of family that sometimes constrict as much as they are essential. Our Common Life is a testament to the power of personal storytelling. It is in our shared human experiences that we find the essence of what it means to be truly human.
