Synopsis

From Agatha Christie’s favorite American author, the first three mysteries starring gentleman sleuth and antiquarian book dealer Henry Gamadge.Unexpected Night: New Yorker Henry Gamadge is vacationing in coastal Maine when the police there need his help. It’s a strange case involving a seemingly natural death, a large inheritance, a mysterious nighttime rendezvous, and a troupe of summer stock actors who start dying off . . . “Daly offers the reader a challenging case with a believable pair of sleuths, all set in a beautiful and distinctive context.” —Margot Kinberg, author of A Matter of Motive Deadly Nightshade: Gamadge’s friend, Detective Mitchell, invites him up to Maine to investigate after three children are poisoned by deadly nightshade. There is not much to link them together apart from they all live in the same small community. And was the death of a state trooper at about the same time a mere coincidence? “An exciting novel and an excellent mystery.” —San Jose NewsMurder in Volume 2: Gamadge investigates a bizarre case in one of New York City’s wealthiest homes. One hundred years earlier, a beautiful guest had disappeared from the Vauregard household, along with the second volume in a set of the collected works of Byron. Improbably enough, both guest and book seem to have reappeared, with neither having aged a day . . . “Delightfully original and suavely written.” —New York Time

A Hunger Artist is a short story by Franz Kafka.     The protagonist, a hunger artist who experiences the decline in appreciation of his craft, is an archetypical creation of Kafka: an individual marginalized and victimized by society at large. The title of the story has been translated also to "A Fasting Artist" and "A Starvation Artist". A Hunger Artist explores the familiar Kafka themes of death, art, isolation, asceticism, spiritual poverty, futility, personal failure and the corruption of human relationships. There is a sharp division among critical interpretations of "A Hunger Artist". Most commentators concur that the story is an allegory, but they disagree as to what is represented. Some critics, pointing to the hunger artist's asceticism, regard him as a saintly or even Christ-like figure. In support of this view they emphasize the unworldliness of the protagonist, the priest-like quality of the watchers, and the traditional religious significance of the forty-day period. Other critics insist that A Hunger Artist is an allegory of the misunderstood artist, whose vision of transcendence and artistic excellence is rejected or ignored by the public. This interpretation is sometimes joined with a reading of the story as autobiographical. According to this view, this story, written near the end of Kafka's life, links the hunger artist with the author as an alienated artist who is dying. The moral of the story, says literature critic Maud Ellmann, is that it is not by food that we survive but by the gaze of others and "it is impossible to live by hunger unless we can be seen or represent doing so".

In the chilling conclusion of the trilogy, Kat is left to pick up the pieces after Adam’s untimely death, but her own secrets threaten to unravel her.

As Tom, her young son, starts acting strangely—seeing and hearing things that aren't supposed to be there—Kat’s sense of reality begins to warp. Luke, now free from Sandra, urges her to move on, but doubts linger, especially after their former boss’s house is mysteriously sold on the day of Adam’s funeral. And when a woman, eerily reminiscent of Imogen moves in, Kat is drawn to her—but something feels off. The more she learns, the more she suspects their meeting was more than coincidence.

People connected to Adam’s dark past begin to meet grim fates, and Kat is left wondering how much of it is out of her control—or if she’s part of a bigger, more sinister plan. Is she being followed, or is her paranoia a sign that something far more menacing is at play?
