  Historic True CrimeThe long forgotten true story of two convict "assigned" servant girls, Sarah 18 y/o & Mary 20 y/o, tried in colonial Australia for the murder of their “master”.  All the people are real. All court testimonies are real. The blatant unfairness of the trial was also very true. The deceased, Captain Waldron, was a retired army Captain, then gentleman farmer and magistrate. The police investigator, Capt. Allman, was Capt. Waldron's friend, also an ex-army officer from the same regiment and a fellow magistrate. The judge, Burton, was ex-navy. There was no inquest, autopsy or death certificate. There were no marks or bruises on the head of the deceased . The witnesses except for the widow and her 12-year-old son saw no punches, allegedly the cause of death. The attending doctor did not arrive in time to give evidence. Hearsay evidence was admitted. There were no witnesses for the defence. The defence counsel, Rowe, was soon after struck off for pocketing witness expenses. The defendants were not allowed to testify. The jury was seven serving military men and took just 15 minutes deliberation before the verdict. The handwritten transcript of the trial was only recently uncovered. The media of the day called it the most sensational trial Australia had ever had. The verdict caused near riots on the streets of Sydney. The police contingent guarding the girls had to be reinforced. The trial led to such outrage that the government had to intervene. The government referred the case to the King.  Three years later the British House of Commons initiated an enquiry into the Transportation of convicts and status of Australia, especially the "assigning" of convicts to private masters, such as were Sarah and Mary. They were effectively slaves. The committee chairman, Molesworth, delivered the final report in 1840. The chairman then moved the motion that would change Australia forever. Queen Victoria by proclamation ended Transportation to NSW a few months later.

  Silurian Period The: The History...

  The early history of Earth covers such vast stretches of time that years, centuries, and even millennia become virtually meaningless. Instead, paleontologists and scientists who study geochronology divide time into periods and eras.  
  The Silurian Age occurred during the mid-Paleozoic, and despite its relative brevity, the era developed some interesting features that promulgated life on Earth. Roderick J. Murchison, a British geologist, named a sequence of rocks after a group of indigenous people called the Silures living in Wales during the mid-19th century. Despite their absence in the Silurian Age, the name was bestowed to honor the tribe. 
  Murchison was inspired by close friend Adam Sedgwick, who named the Cambrian Age, employing the Latin word for Wales. In 1835, the two presented a paper together entitled On the Silurian and Cambrian Systems. Their separate categorizing systems caused a serious enough disagreement over chronology that the friendship ended bitterly. The alternative name for Siluria was Gotlandia after the Baltica island of Gotland. 
  What ultimately precipitated these subdivisions in the chronology was a “famous unconformity” on the River Onny in Shropshire. It indicated a natural break within “classic Silurian on its own home territory.” The timeline for beginning and end dates has remained imprecise, but the order of fossilized discoveries has proven correct. Joachim Barrande, a French paleontologist, geologist, and botanist, pursued the same issue in the Prague Basin of Bohemia. Studying the Paleozoic trilobite for a period of 10 years, his extensive work was published in his Silurian System of Central Bohemia. Altogether, he identified and analyzed over 4,000 new fossil species, producing the enormous Encyclopedia of Fossils, numbering over 6,000 pages.

  Extreme polarization in American politics is perhaps the most confounding political phenomenon of our time. This book binds together polarization in Congress and polarization in the electorate within an ever-expanding feedback loop. This loop is powered by the discipline exerted by the respective political parties on their Congressional members and district candidates and endorsed by the voters in each Congressional district who must choose between the alternatives offered.   As district constituencies become more polarized and are egged on by activists, parties are further motivated to appeal to their respective bases rather than to voters in the ideological center. America has indeed acquired parties with clear platforms—once thought to be a desirable goal—but these parties are now feuding camps. What resolution might there be? Just as the progressive movement slowly replaced the Gilded Age, might a new reform effort replace the current squabble? Or could an asymmetry develop in the partisan constraints that would lead to ascendancy of the center, or might a new and over-riding issue generate a cross-cutting dimension, opening the door to a new politics? Only the future will tell.
