Beschreibung

This composition was inspired by the urgent reality of melting glaciers. I chose to call it Ghostbecause I like to believe that as these white giants die, they do not entirely disappear. Their essencelingers. And if we are willing to pause and to truly listen, we might hear the echo of their slowretreat. In their ghostly presence lies a call, not just to witness but to awaken. The music emphasizes a persistent sense of instability, conveyed primarily through ever-shiftingtimbral and rhythmic choices. These musical elements are meant to evoke the very nature ofglaciers: fragile entities in constant transformation, which we are irreversibly losing.

The conquest of Constantinople in 1453 by a besieging army of around 80,000 men led by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II ended the Byzantine Empire. The city's defense was in the hands of Emperor Constantine XI, who had 7,000 to 10,000 soldiers at his disposal and, likely, fell during the last storm on the city. The fall of the Byzantine Empire also marked the final rise of the Ottoman Empire to become a major power. The conquest has a high symbolic value in both Turkish and Western European reception; Depending on one's perspective, it is viewed as evidence of imperial greatness or as a beacon of decay and demise. In historiography, the conquest of Constantinople is sometimes cited as one of the events that marked the transition from medieval Europe to modern times.

Songs for My Father is a raw and honest collection of free verse poetry about the author’s relationship with her father. It chronicles how his anger and abuse left her emotionally trapped for many years, and how she found her way back into herself through her art.Katherine Lazaruk takes the reader through her early childhood experiences, drawing connections between how family, music, and learning shaped the writer and artist within her. It is a poignant window into the things that so often go unspoken, the elephants in the rooms of our families. Readers who have experienced what it means to be the outsider or scapegoat in their family of origin will be uplifted by this vision of how to break cycles of abuse and reclaim themselves through therapeutic and artistic journeys.Songs for My Father is at times dark, at times uplifting, and always deeply human.

Fiona Foley Provocateur provides insights into the life of one of Australia’s most influential urban Aboriginal and activist artists. From her beginnings in Hervey Bay, Queensland, it follows her young adult life in Sydney where she co-founded Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co-Operative in 1986, to her rise through the art world and, most recently, into an academic life.
This biography reveals how Foley’s life has impacted her art, and her art on her life. It explores the artist’s familial relations, her ancestral home of K’Gari/Fraser Island, and her approach to artmaking and teaching. A provocateur, the artist’s activism is captured delicately throughout. It’s a triumph in story-telling and reveals that there is no art without life.
    Key points:
. An absorbing and uplifting insight into Foley’s courage and determination in confronting racism, the weight of history and the need to forge new models.
. A rare account of a friendship between artist and writer, who are also Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal, which takes account of the identity politics that surround such relationships with nuanced authenticity.
. It traverses the life of one of Australia's most important artists and documents the seismic shifts that have accompanied the decades through which her work has been made.
. Wonderful insights into Foley’s heritage, and the process of her provocative commission at Brisbane Magistrates Court. An important book which records the present, before is glossed or altered by future historians.

Do you like scary movies? Have you ever wondered why?

In Nightmare Fuel, Nina Nesseth explores the strange and often unexpected science of fear through the lenses of psychology and physiology. How do horror films get under our skin? And why do we keep coming back for more?

Horror films promise an experience: fear. But how exactly do filmmakers pull this off? The truth is, there's more to it than just loud noises and creepy images.

With the affection of a true horror fan and the critical analysis of a scientist, Nesseth explains how audiences engage horror with both their brains and bodies, and teases apart the elements that make horror films tick. Nightmare Fuel covers everything from jump scares to creature features, serial killers to the undead, and the fears that stick around to those that fade over time.

With in-depth discussions and spotlight features of some of horror's most popular films—from classics like The Exorcist to modern hits like Hereditary—and interviews with directors, film editors, composers, and horror academics, Nightmare Fuel is a deep dive into the science of fear, a celebration of the genre, and a survival guide for going to bed after the credits roll.
