Synopsis

In "The Hard-Scrabble of Elm Island," Elijah Kellogg presents a compelling narrative that weaves together the trials and tribulations of a rural, coastal community. Set against the backdrop of Elm Island, this novel explores themes of perseverance, resilience, and the intrinsic connection between people and their environment. Kellogg's literary style deftly balances realism with poetic prose, capturing the rugged beauty of the island while illustrating the complexities of human emotion and communal bonds during the 19th century. His nuanced portrayal of characters reflects the broader societal transformations of the time, providing a rich context for readers to engage with the narrative. Elijah Kellogg, a prominent figure in American literature and a staunch advocate for the values of hard work and self-reliance, drew inspiration from his own experiences growing up in Maine. His observations of maritime life and the struggles of ordinary people in a rapidly changing world inform the narrative, allowing him to craft authentic characters whose lives echo the pursuits and hardships of many. Kellogg's background as a minister further enriches the moral dimensions of the story, offering profound insights into the human spirit. This remarkable novel is a testament to the enduring power of community and the strength of the human spirit against adversity. Recommended for readers who appreciate thoughtful literature steeped in realism and evocative settings, "The Hard-Scrabble of Elm Island" invites you to lose yourself in a world where tenacity and love are the currencies of life.

Strong-willed Annabelle Stirling is more than capable of running the family draper shop after the untimely death of her parents. Under her father's tutelage, she became a talented cloth merchant, while her brother Wesley, the true heir, was busy philandering about Yorkshire. Knowing she must change with the times to survive, Belle installs new machinery that finishes twice the fabric in half the time it takes by hand. But not everyone is so enthusiastic.
Soon, riled up by Belle's competitors, the outmoded workers seek violent revenge. Her shop destroyed, Belle travels to London to seek redress from Parliament. While there, the Prince Regent, future King George IV, commissions her to provide fabrics for his Royal Pavilion. As Belle's renown spreads, she meets handsome cabinetmaker Putnam Boyce, but worries that marriage will mean sacrificing her now flourishing shop. And after Wesley plots to kidnap the newly-crowned King--whose indiscretions are surfacing--she finds herself entangled in a duplicitous world of shifting allegiances.
Painting a vivid portrait of life in the British Regency, Christine Trent spins a harrowing tale of ambition, vengeance, love, and complex loyalties against the dynamic backdrop of the early Industrial Revolution.
    This is a reissued version.
By the King's Design is Book 3 in the Royal Trades series.

Winner of the Miles Franklin Literary Award, Winner of the Western Australian Premier’s Book Award, Winner of the Kate Challis RAKA Award.

Harley, a man of Nyoongar ancestry, finds himself at a difficult point in the history of his country, family and self. As the apparently successful outcome of his white grandfather’s enthusiastic attempts to isolate and breed the ‘first white man born’, he wants to be a failure. But would such failure mean his Nyoongar ancestors could label him a success? And how can the attempted genocide represented by his family history be told?

Oceanic in its rhythms and understanding, brilliant in its use of language and image, moving in its largeness of spirit, compelling in its narrative scope and style, Benang is a novel of celebration and lament, of beginning and return, of obliteration and recovery, of silencing and of powerful utterance. Both tentative and daring, it speaks to the present and a possible future through stories, dreams, rhythms, songs, images and documents mobilised from the incompletely acknowledged and still dynamic past.

‘Benang is brilliant. It is a mature, complex, sweeping historical novel which will remind people of Rushdie, Carey and Grenville at their best. This is an absolute page turner and in the end we are left with a sense of joy and gratitude that such stories are still possible – that the silence has been broken.’ Sydney Morning Herald
‘… Benang soars to the level of superb storytelling with an emotional punch to the guts, not unlike Toni Morrison’s Beloved.’ Weekend Australian
‘Haunting and poignant, Benang pierces the heart even as it seeks to lance the savage bleeding of the wounds of white settlement in Australia.’ Canberra Times

The Modern Age is one of information overload. Bombarded, surrounded, and battered by facts, figures, opinions and seemingly whatever else comes out of anyone’s head from all directions at all hours of the day and night. It’s exhausting.

However, in this volume we go back a little way to when social media was an actual chat on the street corner or a dinner party, when breaking news was tomorrow’s newspaper or something momentous when a TV or radio programme could be interrupted with the outbreak of war or the death of a leader or sovereign.

In the pens of such luminaries as Henry James, E M Delafield, C E Montague, Charlotte Perkins Gilman and many others we connect with old fashioned media from publishing and advertising to telegrams and radio and everything in between in ways that are surprising, enlightening but always entertaining.
