The path to the attack on Pearl Harbor was paved by years of escalating tension between Japan, the United States, and other global powers. By the 1930s, Japan had increasingly pursued aggressive territorial expansion in Asia. The country sought to secure resources to fuel its growing industrial machine, leading to its invasion of China and the creation of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. This expansionist ideology put Japan on a collision course with Western powers, particularly the United States, who had significant economic interests in the Pacific region.

As Japan moved to solidify its dominance in Asia, the United States responded with growing concern and diplomatic opposition. American policymakers viewed Japan’s actions as a direct threat to regional stability and their own economic interests, especially in China and the Philippines. By the late 1930s, the United States had placed significant economic sanctions on Japan, including an oil embargo that severely limited Japan’s access to vital resources. The embargo further strained relations between the two nations, as Japan’s need for oil and raw materials became critical to its war machine.

In response, Japan’s leadership became more determined to secure access to Southeast Asia’s oil reserves. The Japanese government began to focus on expanding its influence over the Dutch East Indies, British Malaya, and other territories rich in natural resources. Japan’s growing militarism and its desire for expansion were met with an increasingly isolationist stance from the United States. The U.S. saw Japan’s actions as imperialistic, but its leaders were hesitant to directly intervene, largely due to the isolationist sentiments that permeated American politics following World War I.

How a broken criminal justice system has fueled the crisis of American democracy, and how we can address both problems together.Criminal Justice in Divided America shows how police, courts, and prisons helped to break American democracy and how better approaches to public safety and criminal accountability can help to repair it. Engaging critically with concerns from both the left and the right, Sklansky lays out a clear and deeply researched agenda for reforming police departments, prosecutors' offices, criminal trials, and punishment. Sklansky seeks pragmatic solutions that take account of political realities: the lofty ideal of empowering "the people" or "the community" can mean little when members of the public or the community disagree. While efforts to "defund" the police have exacerbated political conflicts without addressing the underlying problem of how and when force should be used to protect public safety, reforms aimed at improving police accountability, restraining prosecutorial power, and expanding the role of juries can bring together warring parties who share a concern for justice.Ultimately, Sklansky argues, reform must be rooted in a strong commitment to pluralism―bridging political divides rather than worsening them, strengthening democracy, and securing the broad support that enables durable change.

Respect is a foundational human value that extends beyond simple manners or etiquette. It embodies an acknowledgment of each person’s inherent dignity and worth, regardless of differences in background, beliefs, or experiences. Understanding respect involves recognizing the importance of empathy, fairness, and the willingness to honor the rights and contributions of others. It is a dynamic concept that evolves as societies grow more aware of the diversity and complexity of the human condition.
Historically, respect has been central to various cultural, philosophical, and religious traditions. In many ancient civilizations, respect was closely tied to honor and social hierarchy, where individuals were expected to show deference to elders, leaders, and those who possessed wisdom. Over time, however, the meaning of respect has broadened significantly. Modern interpretations emphasize equality, mutual recognition, and the importance of each individual’s unique journey. This evolution reflects a collective shift towards a more inclusive perspective, where every person is seen as deserving of respect simply by virtue of being human.
Empathy plays a crucial role in cultivating respect. By seeking to understand the experiences, struggles, and aspirations of others, individuals can overcome prejudices and foster an environment of understanding. This empathetic approach enables people to view interactions from perspectives other than their own, leading to more meaningful and supportive relationships. As empathy deepens, respect becomes a natural outcome of genuine human connection, transcending superficial differences and encouraging compassion in everyday interactions.

Joséphine Bonaparte, future Empress of France; Térézia Tallien, the most beautiful woman in Europe; and Juliette Récamier, muse of intellectuals, had nothing left to lose. After surviving incarceration and forced incestuous marriage during the worst violence of the French Revolution of 1789, they dared sartorial revolt. Together, Joséphine and Térézia shed the underwear cages and massive, rigid garments that women had been obliged to wear for centuries. They slipped into light, mobile dresses, cropped their hair short, wrapped themselves in shawls, and championed the handbag. Juliette made the new style stand for individual liberty.

The erotic audacity of these fashion revolutionaries conquered Europe, starting with Napoleon. Everywhere a fashion magazine could reach, women imitated the news coming from Paris. It was the fastest and most total change in clothing history. Two centuries ahead of its time, it was rolled back after only a decade by misogynist rumors of obscene extravagance.

New evidence allows the real fashion revolution to be told. This is a story for our time: of a revolution that demanded universal human rights, of self-creation, of women empowering each other, and of transcendent glamor.
