Synopsis

User Behavior Shifts explores the dramatic changes in our online habits, examining how digital engagement, screen time, and platform loyalty are reshaping society. It highlights the complex relationship between technology, psychological triggers, and social influences, revealing how our online behavior is subtly guided, and not always a matter of free will. Did you know that the rise and fall of social media platforms significantly impacts how we interact, not just with technology, but also with each other? The book examines these shifts through data-driven analysis, exploring the role of algorithms, social networks, and mobile technology. It progresses by first establishing an analytical framework, then exploring the drivers behind these changes. Finally, it examines the consequences of these shifts on mental health, social cohesion, and democratic processes. Understanding these dynamics is critical for individuals and organizations alike, given the potential for manipulation in the digital age.

'Unlike me, the Atlantic wild salmon does not have a voice, so it cannot tell the story of why and how it has been driven to the point of extinction.'
Once, the River Shannon was teeming with wild salmon swimming upstream. But when the enormous hydro-electric station at Ardnacrusha was built in 1929, what began as the Free State's crowning achievement would have a devastating impact on the environment.
In this evocative and thought-provoking memoir, Patsy Peril recalls a life deeply entwined with Irish wildlife and embedded in the history of modern Ireland. From a childhood spent on the water to a national conservation campaign, Patsy has a lifetime of knowledge to share about the wild Atlantic salmon – and a plan to save it.

The History of Computing - From...

The story of computing begins not with electricity or screens, but with simple tools and the human need to solve problems. Long before the modern computer, ancient civilizations were already creating devices to aid in counting, measuring, and performing basic arithmetic. These early innovations laid the groundwork for centuries of progress in computing.
One of the most enduring tools from this era is the abacus. Believed to have originated in Mesopotamia over 4,000 years ago, the abacus evolved in various cultures, including Chinese, Roman, and Japanese societies. It was a portable, efficient device that allowed users to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division by sliding beads along rods or grooves. Although simple in design, the abacus was powerful for its time and is still used in some regions for teaching arithmetic and mental calculation skills.
In addition to the abacus, ancient number systems were critical to the development of computation. The Babylonians used a base-60 numeral system, which influenced the way we measure time and angles today. The Egyptians employed a system based on units of ten, using hieroglyphs to represent values. Meanwhile, the Romans had a cumbersome numeral system that made complex calculations challenging. It wasn't until the adoption of the Hindu-Arabic numeral system, with its concept of zero and place value, that true advances in mathematical computation became possible.

Urban poverty is a pervasive issue that affects millions of people living in cities worldwide. As cities continue to grow at an unprecedented rate, the number of urban poor continues to rise, with large portions of the population living in conditions of extreme deprivation. The term "urban poverty" refers to the situation where individuals and families in urban areas experience a lack of access to basic resources, such as adequate housing, healthcare, education, and employment opportunities. Despite being situated in areas of economic activity and growth, urban poor populations face numerous challenges that contribute to their ongoing struggle for survival and upward mobility.
The growth of cities and urban centers has been accompanied by an increasing divide between the wealthy and the poor. While urban areas are often seen as hubs of opportunity, economic growth, and development, they also tend to highlight social and economic inequalities. Rapid urbanization, coupled with limited resources, leads to overcrowded slums, informal settlements, and a lack of infrastructure in many parts of cities. In such environments, the poor face challenges such as high unemployment rates, limited access to education, and poor healthcare services. These conditions create a cycle of poverty that is difficult to escape.
In addition, the urban poor are often excluded from key economic and social systems that would help alleviate their poverty. The concentration of wealth in urban centers disproportionately benefits the middle and upper classes, while marginalized communities remain on the periphery, unable to fully participate in the economic, political, and social life of the city. This growing inequality between different social classes exacerbates poverty and leaves the urban poor trapped in a cycle of disadvantage.
